VULNERABLE CHILDREN FROM THE PAARL-FRANSCHHOEK VALLEY CAN LOOK FORWARD TO A BRIGHTER FUTURE

The Vodacom Shop Celebrity Golf Day, an annual highlight on the Western Cape golfing calendar, took place on the Western Cape’s Best Conditioned golf course on Val de Vie Estate on Thursday 7 November 2019. Celebrities playing on the Pearl Valley Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course included former Springbok captain Jean de Villiers, former Protea Jacques Kallis, Allan Donald, Rob Louw, De Wet Barry, Mr. SA 2019 Heinrich Gabler and Scarra Ntubeni to name a few.

The auction dinner, hosted in the Pearl Valley Conference Centre, raised funds in aid of the Good Hope Day Care Centre for disabled children, operated by Xoliswa Mjezu who joined the evening as a guest of honour. As a mother of a disabled child, Xoliswa truly understands the difficulties faced every day and currently looks after 20 disabled children from her home.

Under the auspices of well-known host Dan Nicholl and Matthew Pearce as auctioneer, who had returned only hours before from Japan as broadcaster of the Rugby World Cup 2019, raised over R612 000. Partners to the event who made this contribution possible include Vodacom Shop, Cape Winelands Properties, The Mantis Collection, Compleat Golfer, Swagg, Kuda Insurance, Bril, Glenmorangie, Duca del Cosma, Easi Grass, Gary Rom, Investec, Lakrids, Quion Rock and Ahead.

Funds raised from the 2019 Vodacom Shop Celebrity Golf Day will enable the setting up of a purpose-built facility on the grounds of the Hope Through Action Community Sports Centre in Mbekweni. The aim is for a modular structure to be fitted out with play areas, classrooms and an office space. A kitchen, ablution facility, parking area and landscaping will also be constructed. The planned Good Hope Day Care Centre will comply with South African government regulations, allowing Xoliswa to apply for grants.

To ensure sustainability and long-term impact, the project will be implemented in partnership with the Val de Vie Foundation’s social investment managers, Valcare, who will coordinate the process and run the monitoring and evaluation process. The winning team of the day consisted of Franschhoek’s most famous culinary expert Reuben Riffel, Roger Carter, Cheslin Grobbler and Bertus van Niekerk.

Over the last three years, the Vodacom Shop Celebrity Golf Day has made a considerable difference in the lives of children living in the Valley. The 2016 event raised sufficient funds for the construction of a roof over the quad at Orleansvale Primary. In 2017, a record amount of funds raised ensured that almost 700 preschool 3-5-year olds in Paarl East and Mbekweni’s under-resourced creches, nominated by Valcare in conjunction with the Val de Vie Foundation, were provided with a daily breakfast porridge for 10 months. Reflective school bags and shoes were donated to learners in the Valley from funds raised at the 2018 event.
