While the Estate Sleeps
A Message from the Val de Vie Estate HOA
As evening settles over the “Valley of Life”, a quiet order takes hold across the Estate. For most residents, this is a time of rest. For the security teams, it is when vigilance becomes even more deliberate.
Additional perimeter patrols begin after dark, with the Tactical Team moving steadily along the Estate’s 17,2-kilometre boundary. Their task is to observe meticulously, ensuring that every section of the perimeter remains secure.
At nightly intervals, the system itself is tested. Working together with the National Operational Command Centre (NOCC), the security team runs routine stress tests across the fence line and its network of 134 cameras. Each camera is checked to ensure its view is clear and operational. If one falls silent or malfunctions, a technician is dispatched immediately to repair it. The same checks are repeated during daylight hours to check that everything is functioning exactly as it should.
Beyond the perimeter, patrol vehicles move through the Estate roads and along the R301 and R45 near the main gates, maintaining a visible presence throughout the night. Inside the control room, screens quietly track movement across the Estate. Thermal cameras often reveal more than people might expect, like duikers moving through the veld, steenbokkies crossing open spaces and sometimes even the hushed passing of a rooikat (caracal).
At 18:00 on weekdays, the team also runs an exception report to ensure that all contractors have exited the Estate, unless extended working hours were formally approved. Residents may request extended contractor hours by emailing security@vdvhoa.co.za for review and approval.
Responders moving through the Estate during the night keep an eye on other details too: a streetlight that has gone dark, a pop-up sprinkler that may be misfiring. When something needs attention, a maintenance ticket is logged for the team to address.
It is steady, disciplined work carried out quietly while the Estate sleeps and it’s this quiet watchfulness that allows residents to rest easily, knowing that through the night, the team remains alert.
