With the heat of summer rising and the lower than-expected-winter rainfall,l it is important that water, once again, becomes an important consideration in our lives. Simple measures taken by each and every one of us in conserving this precious commodity will go a long way towards ensuring that the Boland does not end up experiencing the same water supply issues that other parts of the country are currently facing.
While a lush green garden and a sparkling pool may seem idyllic to many, they do come at a cost. This can be reduced simply by limiting the irrigation of gardens to the cooler hours of the evening, which allows the water to penetrate the soil overnight without too much evaporation taking place. Planting indigenous plant species instead of water-hungry exotics, in particular, Cape Floral Kingdom species, which are at home during our warm, dry summers. Mulching flower beds and digging in compost also helps soil to retain water, as well as cool it, particularly sandy soils.
Pools are a major source of evaporation, but using a pool cover helps a lot, while also minimising the need for expensive chemicals and cleaning. The cover will also reduce the risk of children or wildlife falling into the pool. Please remember that no swimming is allowed in any of the Estate’s lakes, this is not only to protect their ecology, but also as a safety measure.
In an area of low rainfall such as Val de Vie Estate, every drop of water conserved is important to ensure a continuous supply of this life-sustaining element.
