SOUTH AFRICA CLAIMS VICTORY OVER ENGLAND AT THE 2025 STANDARD BANK
POLO TEST MATCH

International polo returned to the Western Cape after a 15-year hiatus, as the Standard Bank Polo Test Match took centre stage at Val de Vie Estate. The match, played at the 16-goal level, culminated in a tense 8-6 victory for South Africa over England.

Led with determination and skill by Captain Jannie Steenkamp, the South African team executed a well-coordinated strategy and resilient defence, anchoring their win in the final chukka. Steenkamp’s leadership was instrumental in maintaining composure under pressure and inspiring his teammates to elevate their game.

On the opposing side, England’s effort was formidable throughout. In recognition of his standout performance, captain Matt Perry was awarded Most Valued Player of the match. The accolade of Best Playing Pony went to Bubbles – owned by South African team-member Dane Csaszar – whose agile movement and intuitive rapport with the rider played a decisive role in key moments of the game.

In attendance were approximately 2 000 guests, who enjoyed not only the high-goal polo but also refined hospitality, stylish settings and a spirited summer-afternoon atmosphere. This milestone event reaffirmed Val de Vie Estate’s reputation as a premier destination for sporting excellence, lifestyle and international events.

With Volvo as the Presenting Partner, Pommery as the Champagne Partner, Stella Artois as Beer Partner, and South African band GoodLuck as the headline act, the event combined world-class polo with elevated hospitality and entertainment.

The 2025 Standard Bank Polo Test Match marked a new chapter for international polo in the region, and for Val de Vie Estate, it was a resounding success – uniting athletes, spectators and brands around a shared experience of heritage, excellence and equestrian mastery.
