  • Winter wedding wonder

Posted on May 21, 2013 by Varety Da Silva

Let cool aqua colours and crisp whites set the tone for a chic Winter wedding. We love using old glass bottles in the table decor and adding some warmth with hundreds of burning candles. Give guests pashminas or cosy blankets if the temperature drops, it's a thoughtful touch that they'll be sure to appreciate.

  • Classic country

Posted on May 17, 2013 by Varety Da Silva

We love the idea of a relaxed, country-inspired wedding with a relaxed, rustic ambiance. Picture an old barn or a beautiful field as the venue - what could be more romantic? Decor draws on all the elements of the countryside: natural fabrics and twines, informal arrangements of wild flowers, hay bales for seating and lanterns for lighting. This is the perfect look for the down-to-earth brides who has a sense of fun.

  • Vintage glamour

Posted on May 13, 2013 by Elsje Human

Vintage styling might draw inspiration from past times, but that doesn't mean that is has to look old-fashioned! Add some sparkle to a vintage look with a bold touch of gold. It adds instant, eye-catching style, reminiscent of the glamour of old Hollywood.

  • A French Love Story: Part 2

Posted on May 7, 2013 by Simone de Wet

France is so often associated with all things romantic, and it's no wonder why: picture the allure of Paris, the city of Lights, the lingering scent of classic Chanel perfume, the taste of real Champagne and the sheer decadence of macarons and petit fours. Add some romance to your week with some French inspired romance. What's not to love?

  • A French Love Story: Part 1

Posted on May 3, 2013 by Simone de Wet

If you thought romance was passé in Paris, all you have to do is look at Paris bridges to see it is being displayed in full force. The Paris “love locks” are back.

The love padlocks have been a phenomenon in cities as varied as Belgium to Japan.

For those of you who haven’t heard of them, here's the story. A couple writes their names on a padlock and locks it onto one of the bridges. They then throw the key into the Seine River as a symbol of their undying love.

As BonjourParis reported last year, the locks on the Pont des Arts near the Louvre were cut off, reportedly by the government. But romance beats politics in Paris and the locks can now be seen on two Paris bridges: Pont des Arts and Pont de l'Archevêché.

    Happy Love Locking!

  • Winter delight

Posted on April 29, 2013 by Elsje Human

Winter can be a wonderfully atmospheric time to hold a wedding: cosy venues, hearty food and the warm glow of candle light immediately spring to ming. But even if it's cold outside, there's no reason that you can't have a wedding dress and decor that still has a sense of lightness and delicate romance. Add lace sleeves to your dress for extra warmth, serve guests frothy cups of hot chocolate, create dreamy cream-coloured bouquets from seasonal flowers and add some sparkle with diamante. Winter will never have felt so fresh!

Gold and silver are associated with glamour and a sense of opulence, but they needn't be over the top or too showy. Rose gold, soft shades of silver and subtle touches of metallic detailing look so pretty and feminine - the perfect way to add some sparkle without the bling.

  • Dare to be different

Posted on March 27, 2013 by Elsje Oosthuizen

Sometimes it's fun to be different and a bit daring! I love these quirky designs which celebrate the strange and unexpected: a classic platter gets livened up with a modern splash of yellow, a bracelet that playfully twists around your arm, a dark layered skirt with a shocking pink lining and an antique cabinet that opens up to reveal dozens of compartments. Fun elements of surprise really make a design or a look stand out, adding a wonderful sense of intrigue and indiviuality.

  • Sweeten your day with Choco-Almond Truffles

Posted on March 18, 2013 by Iza Slabbert

It's the start of another week, so why not sweeten your Monday with these delectable truffles? They are so quick to make and look utterly irresistable. We think they would also be perfect as a decadent tea time treat or as part of a dessert table at an event. Visit Green Kitchen Stories for more mouthwatering recipes, yum!

    Seven minute Choco-Almond Truffles
    Makes 15-20

    15 large medjool dates, pitted
100 g dried shredded coconut, unsweetened
100 g raw almonds or nuts of choice
2 tbsp extra virgin coconut oil, room temperature
    4 tbsp cacao powder
    1 tbsp water
    1 tsp ground cinnamon

Mix all the ingredients in a food processor for about 1 minute or until it forms up like a ball. Remove the knife blades from the food processor. Place the mixture in the fridge for about 10 minutes. Then form 15 – 20 small round truffles with your hands; they should be half the size of a golf ball. Roll the truffles in cocoa powder, finely chopped almonds, shredded coconut or rolledoats. Place in the fridge for 20 minutes before serving.

If you do not have a strong food processor or blender, just place your pitted dates on a plate and mash with a fork until they are sticky and smooth as caramel. Then add the rest of the ingredients and knead by hand until well combined. Place in the fridge and follow the steps above.

  • A symphony of grey and red

Posted on February 1, 2013 by Varety Da Silva

For a dramatic decor scheme, combine the fiery power of red with the coolness of grey. It's a style that's all about contrasts. Use red as a vibrant accent colour and grey as the soft, neutral backdrop. Next month we'll be celebrating Valentine's Day, and this would be the perfect look for a chic, romantic dinner.

  • The hottest colours for 2013

Posted on January 31, 2013 by Admin

Country Living has showcased Pantone's hottest colour palettes for 2013. Here are some of our favourite looks from their showcase:

    Glamour

"An ethereal gray room punctuated by one wall of deep, dark blue-green creates a sensuous atmosphere in Jones Design Company blogger Emily Jones' master bedroom. This sleek scheme takes a cue from Pantone's glamour palette of moody shades of gray and hints of metallic shimmer. Eiseman suggests introducing rich red or cobalt blue accents to add a bit of classic drama."

    Surface Treatments

"It's not just about colors in 2013. "Earthy textures lay a new foundation for palettes of blues and greens," says color expert and executive director of the Pantone Color Institute Leatrice Eiseman. Ana White, author of The Handbuilt Home (due out in October; Clarkson Potter) suggests breathing new life into an existing hutch with several coats of ocean-blue paint, a move she calls noncommittal. Ground the oversize piece with lots of white ceramic objects and natural wood and wicker."

    Out of the Ordinary

"Quirky and whimsical. This is how Eiseman describes this color collection, which marries shades of pumpkin and bright blue with goldenrod, lime, and violet. Beth Styles, author of the blog Parsimonia calls this unlikely harmony of hues home. "I adore bold colors and try to get them into my home as much as possible," Styles says. Her advice? Welcome accessories in to test pairings—a couple of pillows, a throw over a chair, or a spray-painted lamp against the wall."

Pantone announced emerald as its colour of the year for 2013 and we love the rich, deep elegance of this shade. It can be fabulously glamorous and the ideal colour for a smart evening gown or chic accessories. Emerald suits most complexions, so I'm sure that many of us will be incorporating this sexy shade into our wardrobes this year!

  • Go for gold

Posted on January 28, 2013 by Elsje Oosthuizen

If you'd like to add a dash of glamour to your decor, there are few colours that can beat the allure of gold. It's warm, sexy and adds a festive touch. Too much gold can come across as a bit gaudy, so we like to keep the look subtle and stylish. Use gold as an accent colour to complement a neutral or black and white decor theme. Your party is sure to sparkle!

Coral has been one of summer's hottest colours, so it's no surprise that it's become a popular choice in wedding decor. This vibrant shade is a warm, feminine colour that has a sense of fun and edginess. If you'd like to pair it with another colour, coral looks particularly good with green hues such as turquoise and mint. • Pink power

Posted on December 18, 2012 by Admin

Today I'm focussing on pink, the most fabulously feminine of colours, and this post is dedicated to all lovers of this beautiful shade.

Pink is a popular colour in wedding and events decor. Cheerful, romantic and vibrant, it adds a pop of colour and a dash of fun to the overall look. As Country Living puts it, "some colors relax, others excite; pink does both. It provokes romance and glamour, and it is the color of love's first blush. Pink delivers feel-good emotion in the same way that a ranunculus blooms, one layer at a time. Give in to pink's pretty power."

  • Duane and Ezel’s Wedding

Posted on December 14, 2012 by Admin

Duane and Ezel celebrated their special day at Val de Vie on 8 December 2012, and it was a stunning occasion that Val de Vie Full Coordination is so proud to have been part of.

Gorgeous summer weather shone down on the guests, who included Schalk Burger, Joe Pietersen and Brian Habana. The ceremony was held in the historic Franschhoek Dutch Reformed Church, followed by the reception which was held at our beautiful estate.

Musician Gerald Clarke kept guests entertained during the pre-dinner drinks, and they were also treated to a magnificent polo game. The ball room looked nothing less than spectacular, with a warm vintage decor scheme. To add a personal element and a sense of individuality, the couple added numerous personal touches and DIY details into the decor.

One of the highlights was the sensational four tiered cake that included several different layers: carrot cake, tiramisu, chocolate mousse and salted caramel, yum!

The day was thoroughly enjoyed by the newlyweds and their guests, and we had so much fun coordinating the occasion. To see it for yourself, the wedding will be aired on Top Billing on 18 December 2012, so don't forget to tune in at 20:00 on SABC3!

We're so excited to hear that Pantone LLC have announced Emerald as their Color of the Year for 2013. Luxurious, radiant and symbolic of growth and renewal, there's no doubt that this gorgeous shade is going to influence our fashion and decor in the year ahead. Here's what Pantone have to say about the colour:

"Most often associated with brilliant, precious gemstones, the perception of Emerald is sophisticated and luxurious. Since antiquity, this luminous, magnificent hue has been the color of beauty and new life in many cultures and religions. Also the colour of growth, renewal and prosperity, no other colour conveys regeneration more than green. For centuries, many countries have chosen green to represent healing and unity."

"The most abundant hue in nature, the human eye sees more green than any other color in the spectrum," said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®. "As it has throughout history, multifaceted Emerald continues to sparkle and fascinate. Symbolically, Emerald brings a sense of clarity, renewal and rejuvenation, which is so important in today's complex world. This powerful and universally-appealing tone translates easily to both fashion and home interiors."

Eiseman adds that emerald is a versatile colour, because in decor it can work like a neutral, complementing almost everything else. It can be paired with tan, black, blue or even yellow.

We have already seen emerald green on the runways, most botable at Michael Kors, Nanette Lepore and Vivienne Tam.

Our team can't wait to see how this colour will make an appearance in wedding and event decor!

  • Black and gold glitzy christmas vibes

Posted on December 5, 2012 by Simone de Wet

After an interesting year of fashion with bold patterns and colours, I have chosen a very glitzy yet traditional Christmas style for this year's family celebration. This glitzy look represents all the “sparkling” moments or blessings that I have experienced in the past year, while the traditional elements symbolise the precious family time that will be spent with loved ones, enjoying the festivities and abundant love.

Wishing a blessed festive season to all our blog followers!

Summer is here and colourful nail varnish offers the perfect opportunity to add a pop of colour. Pantone named "Tangerine Tango", a hot orange-red shade, as its top colour for 2012, so be sure to add some bright, citrusy color into your style with tangerine nail polish. It's a bold look that's sure to get attention!

Why not splash out with this look at the upcoming Veuve Clicquot Polo Masters, which will be held at Val de Vie Estate on 23 February 2013. Tickets are available for sale on our website, with the option to purchase a ticket which includes a refreshing drink and light lunch for R390.00 pp, or a Veuve Clicquot Masters Picnic Site Ticket for R150.00 pp. Don't miss out on this exceptional event, which is the ultimate celebration of fashion, polo and pure luxury.

  • Nigel and Carly's Wedding

Posted on November 16, 2012 by Admin

Nigel and Carly recently celebrated their wedding at Val de Vie and it was such a pleasure to coordinate their big day. We love that they chose to break away from tradition and put their own spin on the celebrations. Instead of throwing the garter and bouquet, they chose to give these items to special guests as a meaningful gesture. They also decided to replace the traditional first dance with something fun and spontaneous: as the DJ got the music going, Nigel and Carly called up random guests to come and join them on the dancefloor - what a party!

It was such an enjoyable day and we are so glad to have been part of it. Photographer Warren Williams has beautifully captured the spirit of the day, you can view more gorgeous shots on his website.

  • Vintage va-va-voom

Posted on November 7, 2012 by Admin

Vintage style has been a hot look at weddings for many seasons now. We love the sense of nostalgia and romance that this style conveys, but to keep it fresh and original, combine vintage styling with a trendy shade such as turquoise. It's a gorgeous colour for a summer wedding, adding a calm, cool and feminine touch. Complement it with vintage decor elements and you've got a uniquely modern take on the vintage trend.

  • Wise Words from a Beautiful Bride: Izza

Posted on November 5, 2012 by Nadia Valentyn

All brides-to-be know how much work there is planning a wedding and how valuable good advice can be! Val de Vie bride Izza offers some excellent wedding tips:

    Find the right photographer
I know this is something that everyone tells you – but your wedding day really goes by very quickly. Your photos are the one thing you will have left when all the excitement is over, so choose wisely! There are so many talented photographers these days… browse through their photos to get a good feeling of what style you like – each one has a different style! It is definitely worth it to spend some money on the right photographer for you.

Serve your wedding cake for dessert
OK – as you know I really like wedding cakes! Wedding budgets are sometimes tight. So what I did was I used my wedding cake as my dessert. After we cut our cake, they took it to the kitchen and cut it in pieces for dessert (you can maybe add something like ice-cream or chocolate sauce to get a more decadent effect). By doing this, you save a lot by not paying for dessert and a wedding cake.

        Relax and enjoy the moment
Every girl wants “the perfect wedding”. Just remember… if you marry the man of your dreams, the day is already perfect. Don’t sweat the small stuff. Dance and laugh and celebrate, don’t worry too much about the little things that can go wrong, the only person who knows about it is you!

          Get your dancing shoes on!
Comfortable shoes! Weddings are all about celebration…don’t force yourself to wear uncomfortable high heals the whole night. I bought a pretty pair of shoes that I wore to the church and to our photo session for our photos. I then asked my bridesmaids to pack some comfortable shoes for me so I could hit the dance floor without killing my feet after the formalities.

          • The YSL 2012 Summer Makeup Collection

Posted on October 8, 2012 by Simone de Wet

The YSL 2012 Summer Makeup Collection is sure to add a level of glamour to your look in the coming season. With hues of pink and beige, as well as dashes of coral, it's an elegantly feminine collection that we can't wait to use. Nail colours includes shades such as Corail Colisee (coral red), Beige Leger (nude beige), Taupe Retro (dark brown) and Dore Orfevre (gold).

Here's what this leading fashion brand has to say about their Summer look: "Beside the pool, the Yves Saint Laurent woman strikes a pose and bathes in the sun. Beneath the azure sky, the heat is at its peak. She wants to cool off. Her fingers, with their coral red tips, slowly untie her safari shirt and YSL python skin sandals. Her skin is sun-kissed, her lips are tantalizing, her eyes are electric blue. She is chic and provocative as she moves through the pool. Her every step gives the water a mirror-like shine. She loves to feel the tension between the icy water and the burning sun. Between shadow and light, earth and water. Between attraction and the temptation to give in. Footsteps approach. She raises her eyes and sees him. She looks at him with her indigo eyes and an irresistible smile appears on her lips. A subtle encouragement or a simmering promise? When it comes to seduction, the Yves Saint Laurent woman makes her own rules."

Lisa and Mike are a lovely New York couple who will be getting married at Val de Vie Estate in November, and we are so excited to host their special day!

We love these shots from their engagement shoot, which was held in Times Square, Manhattan and DUMBO, Brooklyn. In August the couple got their marriage license and civil registration at the Manhattan City Hall, followed by an amazing lunch at one of their favourite restaurants in New York's fashionable Meatpacking District.

            Coral Pink

Jill Stuart, Tory Burch and Christian Siriano Spring 2012 RTW | Elle

No list of spring color trends would be complete without some pink, and this season’s most popular hue is a bright shade with just a hint of orange. Coral has a great blend of femininity and edginess that works in any girl’s wardrobe. Hopefully you’ll find a piece that matches your aesthetic below!

            Get the Look:

            Tangerine Dream

Pantone named tangerine the color of 2012, so get ready to see this bright hue everywhere this spring. Tangerine is a highly-saturated orange with a reddish undertone, which makes it a flattering shade on most skin tones. Once the warm weather hits, try wearing a bold dress, top or bikini in this shade. However, if you’re feeling a little color shy, start small by rocking a tangerine mani or accessory.

          • The most delicious Custard Cake

Posted on August 23, 2012 by Iza de Lange

The Pretty Blog has a scrumptious recipe for a Custard Cake, and we can't wait to try it! It's a treasured family recipe by Elza de Jongh with a lovely story behind it.

            Custard Cake Recipe

Note: This recipe is all about the custard icing. Please use any sponge cake recipe that you are comfortable with – I like the warm milk method, and I use a little less sugar than tannie Elsa’s original cake batter recipe. But don’t tweak anything about the custard icing – it looks a little curdled, but that is exactly what it should look like! :)

            Ingredients for sponge cake:
            4 eggs
            300 ml (250 g) caster sugar
            500 ml (280 g) cake flour
            15 ml baking powder
            a pinch of salt
            250 ml milk
            100 g butter
            5 ml vanilla essence

            Method:
            Pre-heat oven to 180 C. Grease and/or line 2 x 20 cm round cake tins.
Beat eggs and sugar until light and fluffy.
Sift flour, baking powder and salt together, then fold into egg mixture.
Heat milk and butter until butter is melted, but don’t let it boil. Add vanilla, then fold into flour and egg mixture.
Pour batter into lined cake tins, then bake for 25-30 minutes until cooked and golden brown.
Remove from oven, and cool on wire racks.

            Ingredients for Custard icing:
            500 ml milk
100 ml custard powder (I use Moirs)
125 g butter at room temperature
            200 ml caster sugar
            5 ml vanilla essence
100 ml desiccated coconut, toasted to a golden brown in a dry pan

            Method:
Dissolve the custard powder in 100 ml milk. Heat remaining 400 ml milk until boiling point, then add custard mixture and stir for a few minutes over lowered heat until it is smooth and thick. Take care not to let it burn. Remove from heat and set aside to cool.
In a large mixing bowl, beat butter with sugar and vanilla for a few minutes until creamy.
Add cooled custard to butter mixture, then beat on high speed for about 3 minutes until smooth. It will look slightly curdled, that is perfect!
Spread custard on cake layers and on top, then top with toasted coconut.

          • Wedding Ceremony Basics

Posted on August 17, 2012 by Simone de Wet

Martha Stewart Weddings has an excellent guide on wedding ceremony etiquette. Whether you are planning a traditional Christian or Jewish ceremony, there are certain traditions which should be observed.

For example, at a traditional, formal Christian wedding or a large civil ceremony, the bride's family and friends are seated on the left and the groom's on the right. Mark off the first few rows with flowers or ribbon as seating for immediate family and special guests, as labeled below. Divorced parents may sit together in the front row. If they are remarried or not on good terms, the father and his wife should sit in the third or fourth row. Ushers seat guests as they arrive, from front rows to back; the final guests to be seated are, in this order: grandparents, mother of the groom (with father walking just behind), and mother of the bride.

          • Choosing the engagement ring - The four c's of diamonds

Posted on August 17, 2012 by Iza de Lange

            THE CUT OF A DIAMOND
Cut is possibly the most important factor in the Four Cs, because cut is what gives a diamond its brilliance. Cut is certainly the most misunderstood and controversial of the four Cs.

When we talk about cut, we mean much more than the shape of a diamond. We are talking about the technicalities of exact angles, proportions, symmetry, and polish that affect the way a diamond handles light.

In short, how well a diamond is cut determines how well the diamond will shine.

            THE CLARITY GRADING SYSTEM
The most widely used system for grading a diamond's clarity was developed by the GIA (Gemological Institute of America). Each grade and description was developed so that trained gemologists all over the world working with a ten-power magnification could all give a diamond the same grade.

FI - Flawless : No blemishes or inclusions- Ordinary wear could cause a flawless diamond to lose its flawless status, and therefore they are rarely used in jewelry.

IF - Internally Flawless : No inclusions and only insignificant blemishes - Diamonds, with no inclusions and only tiny scratches or pits that can be removed by repolishing, are classified as IF.

VVS-1 & VVS-2 : Very, Very Slightly Included, very minor inclusions that are difficult to see - The inclusions in this grading are so small that the average person will likely not find them under a ten-power microscope.

VS-1 : Very Slightly Included : Small inclusions that are difficult to see - An average person has a very hard time finding inclusions on diamonds in this category when using a ten power microscope.

VS-2 : Very Slightly Included : Small inclusions that are somewhat easy to see - The inclusions on a diamond in this category are the same as those in VS1, but the inclusions are more numerous or larger.

            • SI-1 : Slightly Included : Inclusions that are easy to see - The unaided eye probably cannot see any inclusions.

            • SI-2 : Slightly Included : Inclusions that are very easy to see - The inclusions of these diamonds can be seen through the bottom of the stone, but not normally through the top.

            • I-1, I-2, I-3 : Imperfect : inclusions that are obvious - The inclusions of diamonds in these categories are easily seen. Diamonds with an I3 rating often look shattered. I2 and I3 diamonds may have inclusions that could affect the durability of the diamond.

            THE COLOUR OF A DIAMOND
The Colours of diamonds can vary greatly. Diamonds can be red, green, purple, blue, brown, yellow, and even black. The brightly Coloured diamonds are often called "fancy Colour." The Colour is determined by which trace elements can be found within the diamond and how they originated. The most valuable diamonds are those for which no Colour can be found in the stone. Such diamonds, however, are very rare. Far more common are diamonds with a slight to obvious yellow tint.

A Colourless diamond is more valuable because it reflects 100% of the light back through the diamond.

            The Colour Grading System
The most widely used system for grading the colour of diamonds was developed by the GIA (Gemological Institute of America). The system uses alphabetical letters ranging from D to Z+ to identify Colours.

In terms of price, D is the most expensive Colour while N through Z are the least expensive. Diamonds, that are yellow enough to receive the rating of Z+, are considered fancies and are not priced in this manner. Their price increases with the intensity of their Colour.

Diamonds with a grade between D and F are rare and therefore, the most expensive. They are often called "Colourless" or "collection." The difference between a D and F graded stone is a matter of transparency, where D is the most transparent. D, E, and F stones are Colourless to the naked eye.

Diamonds in the G though J area are called "near Colourless" or "white." A near Colourless diamond can also be worth a lot, as the average consumer will not even notice the yellow tints. A trained gemologist, however, will be able to detect the yellowish hue.

K through M rated diamonds, or "faint yellow," have a slightly noticeable yellow tint. These stones are more common and less expensive. Some people prefer the yellowish tint because of the warm tone it conveys.

Diamonds that have been graded N through have a noticeable yellow Colour and are therefore much less expensive.

            DIAMOND CARAT
How the carat weight of a diamond affects its value.
A diamond's weight in carats is one measure of its value, along with the other 3 of the "4 Cs:" carat weight, cut, color and clarity.

Diamonds are among the rarest of materials on earth; every diamond, of every size and quality, has a definite value. The size of a diamond is measured in its carat weight. One carat = 1/5 of a gram. Carats are further divided into 100 points. Diamond weight may sometimes be expressed in points or in carats: a "75 point diamond" weighs 3/4 of a carat.
Large diamonds are far more rare than smaller ones. Large diamonds are highly prized because of their rarity and because larger diamonds, when cut, have more brilliance. Carat for carat, a large diamond will cost more than a smaller one.

It is difficult to judge the carat weight of a diamond by its apparent size; diamonds of the same diameter may weigh more or less than each other because of the way they are cut.

            Metallic Cakes

Be bold with a metallic cake. From shimmering silvers to glowing golds, it's sure to make an eye-catching statement! Resist the urge to go all out bling - elegance is key with this look. See your cake as an extension of your decor scheme, so that it doesn't come across as overpowering.

            Lace Cakes

Delicate, romantic and so pretty. These lacy cakes draw inspiration from vintage crochet, doilies and flowert cut-outs. Keep the overall pure and simple with creame and whites, or add some drama with black lace icing contrasted against lighter colours.

            Hand Painted Cakes
Cakes get the artist's touch with the latest trend for hand painted cakes. Each creation is literally an edible masterpiece, showing off any design that you could image. We love floral and botanical inspired designs, but the only limit is what you can imagine!

          • Behind the scenes of the Wedding Album photo shoot

Posted on July 23, 2012 by Iza de Lange

The photo shoot for Val de Vie’s third spread in the Wedding Album magazine was such an exciting day for the Val de Vie Events team. As the ultimate source for all the latest bridal trends and innovations, the Wedding Album is a must-read for any bride. There was no doubt that that our advertisement had to capture the glamour, style and luxury of Val de Vie!

The day began when the models arrived (including our very own Janette Griesel) for their hair and makeup to be perfected. At the same time photographer Jean-Pierre Uys and his two assistants were scouting out every corner of the Pavilion, not far behind Alwijn, the design genius who envisioned the entire shoot.

While they were busy planning, we moved our office to the Ballroom and worked in the middle of the action for the rest of the day. We didn’t want to miss out on a thing! We were surrounded by gorgeous Kobus Dippenaar wedding gowns, large white screens, high tech camera gear, Alwijn and his styling props of flowers, pearls and more, as well as Helga, who had tables laden with makeup and hair products.

As with any event, there were a few hiccups. One was that there were no shoes for the male model who was dressed as the groom. The events team was phoning around, bribing the IT guy and getting ready to jump in the car to race to the mall, until we finally found someone willing to lend us his black evening shoes. Even though the shoes were a size 12 and the model needed a size 8, we finally had black shoes for the shoot!

We gained a new level of respect for brides; wedding gowns are definitely not the lightest outfits to wear. What we admire even more is how bridesmaids are able to assist the bride in getting dressed without messing up their own hair or make up. Now that’s difficult!

Late that night we looked at the amazing shots that were taken by the team. We chose the prefect photo and sent it off to the graphic designer, right on time for the deadline the next day.

With Val de Vie as the ultimate venue for any photo shoot, it was such a fun and successful day. Keep an eye on the Val de Vie blog to see what other magazines we’re going to be featured in.

          • Olga and Hanjo's spectacular wedding

Posted on July 4, 2012 by Admin

Val de Vie Full Coordination was thrilled to host the winter wedding of Olga and Hanjo this past weekend. What a day, what an occasion and what a wonderful couple!

We were honoured to be part of the celebration as production started 9 days before the wedding day. 590 guests filled a spectacular glass marquee tent that was erected on our lush polo fields. The tent was a vast structure, using no less than 5596 screws and 6520 carpet tiles. 29 sparkling chandeliers and 270 bulbs illuminated the space, while we created a real sense of romance with 10 500 roses that came 5 563km all the way from Kenya.

The stationery team had their hands full for this wedding. It took four women 135 hours and 1300 sheets of paper to create everything, all by hand. In addition, an amazing 4.4kg sequence of confetti was required to sparkle the couple as they departed from the Toring Church in Paarl.  To top it off, the dedicated team consisted of 7 coordinators and 6 floor Managers ensuring all details were perfected, 22 chefs with a team of 60 waiters tending to all our guests needs.

After the success of the day, we are so grateful to have had the opportunity to be involved with this special wedding. This bride was wonderfully spoiled on her wedding day and celebrated being a year older on the 2nd of July.

Val de Vie Coordination would like to thank each service professional for their dedication throughout the production of this spectacular wedding: FJS for taking breathtaking shots, Christine Meintjies and her team Catherine Mac, Yolande Marx and Iaan Van Niekerk capturing every detail, Kanya Hunt for the stunning Chanel cake creation, Nicola of La fête for the treasured tea party, Jaype and Fabienne for glamming up our gorgeous bride, Chattels for the beautiful glass structure, Gearhouse for illuminating the entire evening, Secret Diary for the beautiful stationary and sugar station, Nico Laubscher from NConcepts and Designs that brought touches of opulence, Something Different for the lighting that sparkled, Blend Event Life for impeccable service, Absolute Waitrons for their ongoing dedication, Pastry chef Andrew from Val de Vie Estate and Dewald Hurter and his team, and Rob for our quirky and interactive photo booth. Last but not least, thank you to our performing artists who made the evening unforgettable, DJ Conrad, Christo, Cobus and Nic Stevens, Shout Music Company and Romanz.

It was truly a great pleasure to have you all by our side.

Blessings and love to our precious couple, Olga and Hanjo.

          • Keep calm with colour

Posted on July 3, 2012 by Varety Da Silva

Are you feeling as cool as blue, or rather as enraged as red? Staying calm is surely one of the most difficult things to do before and on your wedding day. From the coordinators and the bridesmaids to the bridal couple and family members, everyone feels the pre-wedding stress.

Every bride knows that colours play a massive role on your big day. They are an integral part of the wedding decor and a reflection of your own personality. However, the right colours can also change your mood leading up to the day. Certain shades can have a calming effect, soothing you as during the busy planning process. Soft pinks, delicate blues and greys or a gentle turquoise can set the right frame mind for you. Wear your favourite relaxing colors before your wedding and on your wedding day to be both calm and collected.

          • Beer & Pretzel Cupcakes

Posted on July 3, 2012 by Elsje Oosthuizen

Here's a really decadent snack that's perfect for the nexy rugby game!

Preparation: Makes 12 cupcakes | Preparation: Position a rack in the lower third of the oven. Heat the oven to 350 degrees.

            Ingredients:

            Cupcake
1 cup (4.5 ounces) all purpose flour
1 cup plus 2 tablespoons (7.3 ounces) sugar
1/3 cup plus 2 tablespoons (1.5 ounces) SCHARFFEN BERGER Unsweetened Natural Cocoa Powder
            1/2 teaspoon baking soda
            1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted and warm
            2 large eggs
            1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
            1/2 cup Guinness Stout

            Ganache Frosting
            3/4 cup heavy cream
            4 tablespoons butter
            1/4 teaspoon vegetable oil
            14 oz. chocolate, chopped

            Pretzel Topping
            12 pretzel sticks
            2 oz chocolate, melted

            Instructions:
            1. Add flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking soda, and salt in a bowl and mix thoroughly to combine. Add in the butter, eggs, and vanilla and beat on medium speed for one minute. The batter will be thin enough to pour. Divide it evenly among the lined cups. Bake 18-22 minutes just until a toothpick inserted into a few of the cupcakes comes out clean. Set the pan on a rack to cool. Frost the cupcakes when they are completely cool.

TIP: For light tender cupcakes, spoon flour and cocoa lightly into measuring cups (instead of dipping the cups into the flour or cocoa) and then sweep the measures level without tapping or shaking them.

            To make ganache frosting
            1. Bring heavy cream, butter and vegetable oil to a light boil. Pour hot heavy cream mixture over chocolate. Using a spatula gently fold chocolate through heavy cream until well combined. Set aside to cool for at least an two hours or until frosting consistency is acheived. Frosting will thicken as sits.

            1. Pipe frosting on top of cooled cupcake. Cut pretzels into shards and place on top of cupcakes. Drizzle chocoalate and caramel on top.

It's time for high tea, polo-style! Dress up in an elegant frock, fill your vases with roses and gather your favourite group of friends. Be sure to add equestrian touches into the theme, such as invitations that use a polo motif, paper place settings with cut-out ponies or biscuits in the shape of horse shoes. Snack on cucumber sandwiches, macaroons and petit fours, while sipping Champagne or Earl Grey tea. So pretty, so chic, so much fun!

          • Know your style with AnnaH: The Minimalist

Posted on June 7, 2012 by Admin

This week AnnaH takes a look at another signature personal style, the minimalist. This simple but elegant is so sophisticated, here is what she has to say about it:

"A typical ‘less is more’ approach. Your wedding exposes the core basics and character of key decor fundamentals through removing all unnecessary features or concepts. Straightforward designs and neutral colour palettes shape the foundation of this ‘persona’.

The inspiration is to strip everything down to its essential quality and achieve simplicity. The design is not completely without ornamentation, but all parts and detail are reduced to a stage where no one can remove anything further to improve the look."

A fantastic hour-long consultation with Anneke is including when booking Val de Vie as your wedding venue. View her full post on The Pretty Blog.

Wedding stylist AnnaH is showcasing various signature styles on The Pretty Blog that can brides help to define the right look for their wedding. This week she looked at "The Lady". As she puts it, “your wedding exposes the sheer romance of your ladylike personality. Celebrate your feminine side with ruffles, lace, pearls, bows, beautiful cutlery, crystal glasses and the finest linen. The idea is not to completely go overboard with detail, but to accentuate key visuals with complimenting embellishments and quality materials.”

          • Keep it chic with Elle Canada's Trend Report

Posted on May 24, 2012 by Admin

Elle Cananda has released a fabulous trend report showcasing the top looks for Fall/Winter 2012. Here are some of the looks that we loved the most, visit their website to find more fashion inspiration.

            Lady

How will I recognize the “lady” trend?
It’s a sophisticated, bourgeois style reminiscent of ’50s Hollywood, especially the heroines in Hitchcock films: perfectly chic, with a top-to-toe polish that is, dare we say, done!

What are the trend’s key pieces?
Razor-thin pencil skirts, bow-tied blouses, past-the-knee day dresses, skirtsuits, tailored shifts and three-quarter-sleeve coats.

            Who can wear it?
Professional gals who want a feminine, sleek style.

            How do I accessorize?
Hats, gloves (the new essential), fur wraps, pearl necklaces, structured frame bags and tights (ultra-sheer or crochet).

How can I make this look work for me?
Downplay extravagant accessories, keep hair simple and go for naturallooking makeup to avoid looking like a Mad Men cast member.

            Who did it best?
Gucci, Bottega Veneta, Lanvin, Donna Karan and Jean Paul Gaultier.

            Florals

Isn’t this normally a spring trend?
This is completely new! Florals used to be reserved for spring, but now it’s a festive garden party year-round.

What types of flowers inspired designers?
Style pollination had dandelions and sprigs of lily of the valley at Miu Miu, blossoming white roses at Lanvin and multicoloured wildflowers at Jil Sander, all set against a dark base creating a flourishing, graphic effect.

            When can I wear it?
Rethink dressing: Adopt florals as an easy dose of daytime chic in early fall or save it for winter’s holiday celebrations.

            How do I wear it?
The print is the focal point, so tread lightly with jewellery and finish with simple pumps or wedge booties.

            Who did it best?
Lanvin, Paul Smith, Moschino, Giambattista Valli, Jil Sander, Sportmax and Miu Miu.

            Green

What was the hottest colour on the fall runways?
Green is, without a doubt, the season’s It shade.

            Which shade of green?
Cult faves from the ’70s: olive, khaki, forest, pine and bottle. Plus, gemstone shades of turquoise and emerald, as seen at Gucci.

What piece should I invest in?
Everything from coats and suits to blouses and dresses. Style tip: Go from sage to sauvage with coloured fur accents.

            What about prints?
Think Emilio Pucci’s fanciful baroque patterns or Dries Van Noten’s artful abstractions.

Can I wear it from head to toe? Why not?
Or mix it up with neutrals like grey and black. Feel daring? Go for gold, violet or taupe combinations.

            What about accessories?
Bags, belts, shoes and boots in a deep, dark shade of green are top!

            Who did it best?
Chanel, Emilio Pucci, Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Prada, Fendi, Louis Vuitton and Marni.

            Text by Anthony Mitropoulos.

          • Pretty in pink

Posted on May 24, 2012 by Admin

Winter is well on its way, and what better to brighten things up with a splash of pink? Feel inspired for the new season by adding touches of soft pink. It's a pretty, feminine look that will cheer up any rainy day!

          • Rose-tinted romance

Posted on May 21, 2012 by Admin

Pink is the most feminine of colours, exuding a real sense of romance. We love to use softer shades of rose, a subtle way to include pink in a decor scheme and add a somewhat vintage feel. Creams, greys and soft neutral tones help to break up these pink hues so that they don't become too overwhelming.

          • Cake couture

Posted on May 21, 2012 by Admin

The centrepiece of most weddings is a beautiful, lovingly-made cake that reflects the style of the event itself. Today brides have a dazzling array of cakes to choose from. Classic tiered cakes remain a popular option, either embellished with sugar flowers or a pattern inspired by the decor scheme. For those who prefer a less structured look, we love a simple frosted cake adorned with fresh flowers. Feeling adventurous? Try a stacked crepe cake or even a pie. There are so many delicious ideas just waiting to be discovered (and eaten!).

          • Absolute elegance: Black and white

Posted on May 21, 2012 by Admin

Classic black and white is always a winning combination for an elegant decor scheme. It's fresh and clean style that's so versatile; it can either look modern and dramatic or classic and sophisticated. If you're hesitant to go all out with this look, introduce a third accent colour, but try to keep the overall black and white style for maximum visual impact. Imagine black vases or dark wood set off by crisp white walls, or pure white linen accented by black throws and scatter cushions. Gorgeous!

          • Coastal calm

Posted on May 8, 2012 by Elsje Oosthuizen

Elsje from the Events Team has created another beautiful moodboard that's inspired by coastal living. Softs aqua tones and pale grey create this peaceful palette, livened up by black anf white stripes and burts of turquoise. It's a gorgeous look for a beach wedding

          • Christine and Bobby's Wedding

Posted on May 7, 2012 by Admin

Val de Vie Estate hosted the wedding of Christine Markgraaff and Bobby Behan on 9 March 2012. 250 guests attended the celebration, and what an occasion it was! The big day included a variety of unforgettable elements, including a thrilling 45-minute polo game, crystal chandeliers, a sumptuous menu by The Polo Club Restaurant amd a decadent dessert station filled which was laden with mini milk tarts, malva pudding, macaroons, nougat, fudge, chocolate brownies, vanilla bean ice cream scoops and the wedding cake made by Kanya Hunt.

The celebration continued into the early hours of the morning and there’s no doubt that it will be fondly remembered by the guests for years to come.

          • Subtle glamour

Posted on May 7, 2012 by Elsje Oosthuizen

We love glamourous decor and bold styling, but sometimes a subtle touch can look so much more elegant. Elsje Oostuizen, a Coordinator who's part of the Val de Vie Events Team, created this beautiful moodboard which creates an understated sense of opulence. Soft, faded colours are combined with feathers and dashes of silvery sparkle. It's these small details that create a real sense of glamour, without being too over the top.

          • Ralph Lauren Purple Label Spring/Summer 2012 collection

Posted on May 3, 2012 by Iza de Lange

This season Ralph Lauren's men's Purple Label is distinctly tailored and sophisticated. We really love this distiguished look and think that grooms should take note of this attention to crisp, clean lines and impeccable detail.

Ralph Lauren's signature understated elegance is also the inspiration behind a menswear photo shoot that Iza of the Events Team is coordinating for the Wedding Album. Look out for the winter edition of the Wedding Album to view the shoot, it's the perfect guide for style savvy men to update their wardrobes this season.

          • Taken by turquoise

Posted on May 3, 2012 by Admin

We're still smitten with turquoise, one of the hottest colours of 2012. It's vibrant and sexy, while also slightly whimsical. Varety from the events team created this gorgeous moodboard that celebrated this beautiful colour.

Turquoise looks great as an accent colour to introduce some depth to a white or neutral interior. It's cool undertones make it a great companion to other shades such as pink, yellow, green, purple and even deep reds.

          • West Coast romance

Posted on April 30, 2012 by Elsje Oosthuizen

The lovely Elsje Oosthuizen of our Events Team created this beautiful mini moodboard, which was inspired by an amazing wedding she coordinated at Varswaterbaai in the West Coast. We love the gentle shades of turquoise - this is beach romance at its most beautiful.

Be sure to look out for the photos taken by Joe Dreyer of this magical wedding, we can't wait to show you!

Vintage inspired decor has been big news for quite some time, and this year it's still a very popular look for weddings and parties alike. We like this gentle interpretation of the theme that includes soft, pale blues with the occasional hint of pink and passionate magenta. Fun and feminine, it's a beautiful combination of colours.

As they put it, "it is still elegant, but it's lighter and fresher than the first, more of an everyday spritz." We can't wait to try it at our next evening event!

At the moment I absolutely adore thunder grey and crisp white, combined with with hints of old gold and metals. There is something about the “less is more” concept that really works and I love the feeling projected by this mood board.

At first glance there is a lot going on, but the natural colours create a sense of peace and harmony. Pairing and grouping interesting decor items creates a great visual impact.
I'm so inspired, I'm definitely ready to change a few rooms and possibly the Events office too. Happy decorating!

When I asked my fiancé what kind of a wedding he wants, he said, "one that would make me his wife... for this is truly meaning full and special."

Apart from the emotional element of weddings, I really love the visual aspect. I adore colours... seeing how they play together, complement each other and create beautiful settings.

I also love how lights reflect on different surfaces, hearing the voices of happy guests and enjoying the smell of fresh flowers. These are definitely the things that I look forward to on my big day!

          • Memories and moments: A memorable decor statement

Posted on February 2, 2012 by Elsje Oosthuizen

The two things that comes to mind when looking at this mood board created by Elsje are interior design and memory.

Interior design describes a group of related projects that transform an interior space into an effective setting for the range of human activities that are to take place there.

In psychology, memory is the ability to store, retain, and recall information and experiences.

This interior look captures both of these concepts by creating a space that celebrates memories and past experiences. It's a modern and funky look that's perfect for people who love to be surrounded by memories of their loved ones.

          • The intrigue of Istanbul

Posted on February 2, 2012 by Elsje Oosthuizen

Elsje from Val de Vie Events loves and dreams of spending time in interesting Istanbul

Istanbul is a cosmopolitan city built on two continents. The most recent population census shows that it has a population of about 12 million people, from which almost 65% are inhabitants of the Asian side. Fulfilling the residential role of the city, it doesn't present a lot to see historically. In contrast, the European side is the commercial and cultural center, further divided into two districts (the Old City and the modern downtown) by a narrow channel of water called 'the Golden Horn'.

            Four Fun Facts about Istanbul
            1. Istanbul is the only city in the world that stands in two different continents, Europe and Asia. Most people think of it as an Asian city but actually the historic center is on the European part of town. The Bosphorus River divides the two continents and joins the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara.
            2. Although it was the capital of some of the most important empires in the world: Roman, Byzantine, Latin and Ottoman; Istanbul is not Turkey’s capital. Ankara is the country’s capital since it became the Republic of Turkey in 1923. It is however its largest city with close to 12 million people.
            3. The city was first known as Byzantium but changed to Constantinople when Roman Emperor Constantine the Great made capital of the Eastern Roman Empire. The named finally changed to Istanbul in 1930 when Mustafa Kemal Ataturk proclaimed the Republic in 1930. To ensure the usage of the new name, Turkish authorities resend all mail and packages that were sent to its previous name.
            4. When the city was part of the Ottoman Empire there were over 1,400 public toilets all around the city. At the same time, there weren’t any even at palaces in France and the rest of Europe.

          • Viva Italia!

Posted on January 30, 2012 by Simone de Wet

"Italy is my inspiration and I wanted to share some of my favourite things with you... I am inspired by all things pure, at this point I am all for “less fuss” and more simplicity. We are living and operating in such a busy environment filled with sound, colour and speed.

Italy has such a real feel. After visiting this stunning country I felt inspired by the quality of so many things, from the food and fashion to the family values and the time that these lovely passionate people spend to enjoy the good things that life has to offer in the stunning little romantic piazzas.

The old world charm just left me constantly gasping for air as the architecture is authentic and beautiful.

Italy = Love made simple, no fuss, just naturally charming.

            Viva Italia!"

          • It's Strawberry season!

Posted on September 20, 2011 by Iza de Lange

Yay, it's strawberry season! Go strawberry picking and surprise the people close to you with a strawberry dessert you REALLY made yourself. ;)

Strawberries can be eaten fresh, frozen or dried. You can use strawberries in desserts, cakes, muffins, cereals, yogurts or salads, or you can also drink strawberries in shakes, juices or cocktails.

Strawberries aren't just delicious, they're beautiful too! If you are more of a chocolate person, use strawberries to decorate your chocolate dessert for a touch of colour.

Here is a delicious recipe by Creative Cakes for a strawberry cheesecake:

            Strawberry Cheesecake

            • 1/2 packet of biscuits
            • 80 ml butter, melted
            • 60 g strawberry jelly
            • 1 tsp gelatine
            • 1/2 cup boiling water
            • 1 can evaporated milk
            • 1 cup cottage cheese
            • fresh berries

            Instructions
            1. Combine biscuit crumbs and butter and press into a 22cm loose-bottomed cake pan.
            2. Dissolve jelly and gelatine in boiling water and allow to cool and become syrupy.
            3. Whip ideal milk until light and fluffy. Beat in the cooled jelly, then the cottage cheese.
            4. Pour into prepared biscuit crust. Chill for 2-3 hours, until well set.
            5. Decorate with fresh berries before serving

I love this soft, feminine look coupled with confident splashes of silver and delicate tones of cream and grey. It reminds me of clouds floating by and soft sunrays brushing over rocky hilltops.

          • Let them eat cake

Posted on September 1, 2011 by Nadia Valentyn

Whoever said that cupcakes should be just cake? It’s time to do away with the boring and bring the dessert into the cupcake. Why not opt for a creamy cheesecake centre topped with cream cheese frosting or smothered in seasonal berry sauce? And who could resist a ganache centre, topped with decadent Belgian chocolate fudge or sauce? If you want to stick with a more traditional cake option, choose a vanilla, chocolate or lemon cake and fill it with a generous helping of caramel. It'll create a delicious surprise in the first bite!

Decorate your cupcakes by theme with ribbons, Lindor Chocolate Balls, heart-shaped candy, fruit, sprinkles, glitter and loads more for a personal touch. Now get baking and remember, the world is your cupcake!

          • Breakfast weddings: A top trend

Posted on August 26, 2011 by Iza de Lange

This is for all the early lovebirds a breakfast wedding! We all know that breakfast is the most important (and my personal favourite) meal of the day – so why not have a breakfast wedding? Morning wedding receptions offer a refreshing change of pace and they're quickly becoming a popular choice for brides. To top it off, a breakfast wedding allows the newlyweds to finish their day early with plenty of time to start their honeymoon.

In terms of catering, you could opt for a plated breakfast but a buffet would be the best bet, as guests can decide what they would like to eat. Serve a range of delicious breakfast treats, from the traditional English breakfast to waffles, pancakes, muffins, croissants, orange-scented scones and walnut banana bread.

You can still have a wedding cake, simply serve a lighter cake such as carrot, lemon or cheesecake, rather than a heavy chocolate-covered cake. Another option is to serve a cake topped with fresh fruit.

As for music, you can still have a DJ and a dancefloor. It'll be midday by the time the ceremony and brunch are wrapped up, a perfectly acceptable time to get celebrating!

            Be creative, fresh and different.

            Iza

Posted on August 24, 2011 by Admin

Today we'd like to introduce Nadia, our Events Account Executive. We love that sheis so hardworking and goal orientated, yet still retains her easy going personality and sense of fun.

Before getting to work, Nadia starts each day with a coffee. The things that make her day? Seeing her friends, the colour turquoise, the sound of the first raindrops falling or indulging in some chocolate.

Nadia is celebrating her own wedding in November, so she is currently planning all the details for her big day. For her it's the most natural thing to do - as she quotes, "love and marriage… goes together like a horse and carriage!"

          • Meet the Events Team: Introducing Simone

Posted on August 23, 2011 by Admin

Simone is the Managing Director of Val de Vie Events and we all admire this exceptionally talented lady. She's an absolute marvel at coordinating events and relishes every opportunity that comes her way. As she puts it, "joy = contentment = my career, what I truly love!"

Simone lists several things that make her day. The first is waking up to her adorable three-year-old daughter, Indya-Sage, who usually asks if she can watch Barbie. In her free time, Simone loves to savour ginger and fresh sushi with her hubby at Sevruga at the V&A Waterfront. She also loves the little things that make life special, whether it's the weather in spring, admiring pretty hearts and butterflies or simply enjoying the sound of birds flying high in the sky.

Simone has an excellent eye for design and loves the current trend for bespoke items that are customised to be unique and edgy. Her top colours for 2012 are tangerine and crisp yellow. In her own words, "they're fresh, inspiring, a bit crazy and super daring!"

          • Tranquil turquoise

Posted on August 22, 2011 by Iza de Lange

This blueish tone of light green is extremely close to my heart.

I easily get lost in this peaceful yet bright colour. It creates the illusion of being on a tropical island... I can hear the seagulls calling, feel the warm sand between my toes, taste the tropical fruit cocktail, smell the ocean and the sunscreen I had to put on for protections from the blazing sun.

It’s a colour much loved by celebrities and you’ll see it being used in decor, fashion and weddings. It looks absolutely gorgeous combined with neutrals, black, white, and brown.

          • Thunder & Lightning

Posted on August 17, 2011 by Simone de Wet

After my travels to Jozi for the day and landing at OR Tambo with a ground temperature of 2C, it was hard to see the “EGOLI” (City of Gold). Instead, what I did see was thunder and lighting which inspired me to design this mood board.

Grey is so the new black and white! Paler shades of grey are light and fresh, with perhaps a bit more interest than plain white. If you want to create a moodier feel, then choose gun-metal grey instead of black. It looks less harsh and never fails to convey a sophisticated ambience.

With so many shades and so many choices, grey is a beautiful colour that suits many different looks, whether modern, vintage or glam. It has a certain old school charm too, making it a real favourite!

Enough said - grey is grey is GREAT!

            Simone, Val de Vie Coordination

          • Meet the Events Team: Introducing Iza

Posted on August 12, 2011 by Admin

Iza is our Val de Vie Events Assistant and we really treasure her as part of our team. Pure hearted and full of energy, there are many things that she loves about life: hearts, colours, the beauty of Spring and fresh flowers, and anything feminine and chic. Always ready to spring to action and lend a hand, Iza's jokes that her ears prick up when she hears the sound of her BBM alert!

Food is definitely one of her joys in life, which is why she really savours the taste of chocolate (as well as a hearty Spur breakfast!).

          • Trendy tangerine

Posted on August 11, 2011 by Admin

Less is more and more is tangerine! Spotting the latest trends on the New York catwalks is as much fun as creating a quirky moodboard that screams over-the-top fabulousness.

We love these fresh, bold shades of orange, escpecially when they're used as accents to a pure, clean look. This theme could work well for a variety of events, but with such intense colours at play, some restaint is necessary. Create a menu design with a simple but playful edge. You could also add a dress code called "Pure Simplicity", allowing guests to opt for a sophisticated, subtle style that complements the tangerine colour scheme, rather than overwhelms it.

With the smell of oranges and blossoms in the air, your event is guaranteed to be nothing less than a fabulous garden festival!

Posted on May 31, 2011 by Admin

Pieter & Jeanine - Val De Vie from FJS Productions.

Val de Vie absolutely loved hosting the wedding of Pieter and Jeanine. This gorgeous couple are truly talented - the beautiful bride was a Miss SA Finalist and princess, while Pieter is an accomplished rugby player.

On their honeymoon the couple heard that Pieter was picked to play in the UK for the Tigers, so they quickly changed their honeymoon plans and left for the UK. Now they're back home and Pieter is playing for the Cheetahs.

As the stunning video by FJS Productions shows, the wedding was a spectacular occasion. We wish the newlyweds all the best for their future together.

          • A closer look at our Pasella shoot

Posted on April 1, 2011 by Admin

Val de Vie was recently featured on Pasella, and formed the backdrop to three beautiful themed events. The first was a morning wedding royal high tea wedding celebration, followed by a pretty Afri-Frans lunch wedding. The final concept was a New York inspired city wedding for an older couple who prefers more serious entertaining, but with luxury elements and drama. We loved being part of this brilliant show and had so much fun being involved in this episode!

Here is Pasella's write-up of the shoot:

Dié een is vir almal wat vir hulle droomman of –vrou geval het. Pasella het kom kuier by on shier op Val de Vie.

By elke tafel word die dekor, papierdekor asook koek gedoen.

          • Saleem and Mishkah's Wedding

Posted on February 6, 2011 by Admin

Val de Vie was delighted to host its first Muslim wedding this January. The wedding of Saleem and Mishkah was a beautiful day, with pink, crystal black and white forming the back drop for this French themes fairytale.

We loved the bling factor as well as the very royal inspired soft pink rose balls.

Bryani, Atchar and Naan have a complete new meaning for the Val de Vie Events team, and all we can say is it was one massive feast!

The Polo game blew the guests away and many comments were flying around the terrace as guests were treated to a full non-alcoholic cocktail bar. The sprinkles that guests added to their freshly-made smoothies were a definite hit.

We wish the couple everything they desire and more. To the Brides Mom; Mrs Ahmed, you truly supported your daughter and gave her the dream wedding she so wished to have.

            Blessings and love,

As part of his proposal, Rohan designed a beautiful label for a Champagne bottle bearing the words "Suikerbossie, ek wil jou hê”, a line from a famous Afrikaans folk song. It's no surprise that Lurina was enchanted by the gorgeous design!

          • Save the Date with Elsje Designs

Posted on May 18, 2010 by Admin

If you are planning a spring or summer wedding, now is the time to mail your Save the Dates! Elsje Designs is currently offering a free Save the Date special to all the Val de Vie bridal couples with every wedding invitation order. Please contact 021 976 7111 or info@elsje.co.za for more information.

The Purpose of Save the Date Cards
First impressions do matter: give your guests something to talk about by sending Save the Date notices that pop off the page (or computer screen)! A Save the Date is usually simple, but they should have an added touch that make it so memorable that your guests cannot possibly forget to bookmark that date.

Furthermore, Save the Date cards serve as reminders or to give guests a heads up that you are going to get married. More than that, they allow the invitees to clear their schedules and make travel arrangements well in advance.Often couples are getting married on or near a major event or public holiday, which makes advance bookings for traveling or accommodation even more important. To avoid disappointment with family and friends not being able to attend your wedding, it is crucial to sending out a notice of your impending nuptials.

When to mail your Wedding Save the Date Cards
Save the date cards or emails are usually mailed out 6 to 8 months before the actual wedding date.

Types of Save the Date Cards
There are two types of Save the Date notifications: a paper card or a digital email.

The latest trend is to email a digital Save the Date that is interactive, whereby a guest can click a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ button whereby they can indicate their attendance. Therefore you only need to mail invitations to the guests that indicated that they can attend your wedding – a great way of saving on your quantity of invitations and cost.

Paper save the date cards can be more fun and interactive. But a card with a magnetic backing is the most popular choice today. These are in great demand because they can be kept on the refrigerator door, and no one is likely to forget the wedding date if the card is stuck there.

Wording for your Save the Date
The wording on most Save the Date cards is usually straight to the point. Usually, it consists of the bride and groom's name and the date and town or city where the wedding would take place. For wording options, please contact the Elsje Designs studio.

Remember to let your guests know via a postscript that their wedding invitation and directions are to follow.

            Choosing the Design and Style
Wedding Save the Date cards can be anything from formal to casual and could even be whimsical. Conveying your wedding style on your Save the Date is also a good idea if you already know what it will be. Your wedding colors can be represented on your cards as well. It would not only give the recipient a sneak peak at your chosen colors, but the uniformity from the beginning to the end of the wedding would be more than impressive.

            Design Ideas
Whatever you choose for your Save the Date, make it fun and you're sure to get a favorable response. Here are some ideas to get you started:

Include colors and images that make sense to the venue and date, such as a botanical image of a rose if you plan to marry in the springtime in a rose garden, or a card tied up with a cotton blue gingham ribbon for an oceanside summer soiree.

            • Your save-the-date cards can be as simple as a digital emailer, a postcard or as elaborate and interactive as a magnetic puzzle or a fun paper jet.
            • We're fans of including a picture taken shortly after the engagement, or a collage of pics to represent the fun you have had together on a recent holiday or the evening of your engagement.
            • Refrigerator magnets -- ones with just your names and wedding date -- are cool too.
We like original Save the Dates – we can print it for you on a pencil, badge, or even on a gorgeous tea towel!
            • An all-time favorite done many different ways is the calendar. We love to create a card that looks like a mini calendar month with the date you've chosen circled or decorated.
            • Remember this is not a formal invitation to your wedding. It is simply a great way to give advance notice of your special day. The look of this card could be coordinated to complement your wedding décor and style.

If you want to receive regular fresh ideas via email, please subscribe to Elsje's blog.

Aretha and Dominic recently celebrated their big day at Val de Vie, and what a beautiful day it was! The estate is also the same spot where the couple got engaged, making it a very special place for this amazing pair.

The wedding was an enchanting event, with dazzling sunset colours lighting up the sky just as they did on their engagement. 120 guests attended the occasion, which commenced with a ceremony at a church in Paarl. Thereafter guests and the newlyweds moved on to Val de Vie where they enjoyed a private polo game. A white on white decor scheme with fresh funky touches of aqua blue and green perfected the ambience.

          • The perfect proposal

Posted on August 24, 2009 by Admin

There are few moments that are as romantic and unforgettable as the marriage proposal. Dominic and Aretha are going to celebrate their special day at Val de Vie, but Dominic first had a very special request: to officially propose to Aretha at Val de Vie, with a horse. The estate is an incredible setting for special moments, and Val de Vie is more than happy to help you create the perfect proposal and make your wedding dreams come true.

Dominic had a very particular idea of what he wanted for the proposal, and it was our pleasure to play a part in this magical moment. As he says, "I'm not a horse rider myself, but was always fascinated with the classical idea of a 'knight on white horse' sort of proposal. I also know that Aretha (my fiancé) absolutely adores horses. This was when I decided to seek the help of the Val de Vie team and boy, did they oblige. I think they might even have been more excited for the proposal than I was!"

John Lister, polo manager, stepped in as the role of the knight, and the scene was set for the perfect proposal. Dominic remembers it fondly: "obviously (unfortunately) I could not be the knight myself, but a note was delivered by a charming, very sophisticated knight (Joanna's husband). The horse was well prepared and looked stunning, almost royal. Our knight gently eased towards us and delivered a 'will you marry me' note to my non-suspecting girlfriend (who thought we were visiting the estate for a wine tasting. Right then, she turned around and I was on my knees whilst a compilation of our favorite love songs softly started playing in the background. I then asked her to marry me."

Both Dominic and Aretha cherished this very special occasion. "I just want to thank Joanna Lister, Petra, Simone and the rest of the team at Val De Vie for their help with realizing my dream proposal. Together we managed to knock my then-girlfriend, now fiancé, off her feet! When we finally dealt with our tears, she found a breath to say yes and suddenly we were surrounded with the rest of the team, who brought us flowers and Champagne. This all took place at the centre of the polo field, during an autumn sunset. It was MAGICAL - a day we will NEVER forget."
