  • Sale of the Val de Vie Polo House

Posted on November 28, 2012 by janette

    The Polo House

Set against the backdrop of the majestic Drakenstein and Simonsberg Mountains of the Paarl-Franschoek Valley near Cape Town. With its combined French Provencal and Cape Colonial architecture epitomise a harmonious and tranquil grand country lifestyle.

    Best seat in the house...

Polo played weekly on the Pavilion Field from October to April.

    Living in Luxury...

Val de Vie Estate in the Cape’s Paarl-Franschoek valley recently set a new record when a property on the estate fetched the highest price per m2 for any estate property in the Cape Winelands. The beautiful house was formerly occupied by Olympic swimming champion and Val de Vie shareholder Ryk Neethling, who recently acquired another property on the estate and with the building of his new house well underway. The grand Polo House was completed in October 2011 by Guardian Development Projects, fetched a price of R 11 250 000, which translates to R 20 680 per m2. This is the highest price for any cape winelands, estate property which typically fetch prices of around R 12 500 per m2.

The purchaser is a leading businessman and Polo patron from Nigeria. He has a broad range of business interests and at one time was the biggest private employer in Nigeria. His family has vast experience in international finance and he knows a great investment when he sees one. “I see great potential for increased business co-operation between South Africa and Nigeria,” says the purchaser. “Within my portfolio of business interests, I am involved with several leading organisations with Cape-based offices and Val de Vie is conveniently located for me to be able to interact with my business interests and maintain my involvement with my passion for Polo. It is a fantastic estate and offers everything that I need for my South African home base.”

The house has featured in many magazine articles and television programmes and is one of the hallmark developments on the estate. The house is in excess of 540 m2 and is built on a stand of 1130 m2.

“We’re delighted to attract international investors of this calibre,” says Val de Vie CEO, Martin Venter. “It reinforces the quality of the investment and property proposition that Val de Vie presents as a primary residence estate and shows that this is truly a world-class development. We have excellent security, beautiful houses and plenty of open spaces to create an atmosphere of country living, whilst being conveniently located for resident’s business interests.”

Val de Vie  also recently scooped two International Property Awards in Dubai: a 5-star award for Best Development, Multiple Units; and Highly Commended in the Best Leisure Development category. “I’m really thrilled and proud that Val de Vie Estate has won these awards,” says Venter. “The diverse offering that encompasses Val de Vie has had a positive bearing on sales and was a prime factor in us winning. It is still a relatively young development and despite tough economic conditions, has managed to attract attention and investment with over 90% of stands already sold.”

  • BlackBerry Pink Polo in aid of Reach for Recovery

Posted on November 5, 2012 by Admin

Val de Vie is recognised as South Africa's premier lifestyle, wine and polo estate, and once again we hosted BlackBerry Pink Polo, the most sought after event on the social calendar.

For the third year in a row BlackBerry® sponsored the event in line with its support for the cause of women's wellness and the fight against breast cancer. Supporting sponsors included Bosch Siemens Gaggenau, Discovery, Polo SA and Marie Claire.

This year at this exclusive event saw BlackBerry and Gaggenau, two top male Polo teams, play an exciting match on Val de Vie's celebrated polo fields.

Guests enjoyed a lavish high tea in the spectacular setting of this beautiful estate. Pongracz and Pink Pigeon ensured the guests were kept hydrated, while pop-up shops included Carrol Boyes, Elizabeth Arden, The Little Hattery and Jan & Guy.

The highlight of the afternoon was a fashion show by Polo SA, who showcased their latest designs and trends for summer. A special range of Pink Polo products are being sold in their retail stores and select Stuttafords whereby 15% of proceeds from these products will be donated to CANSA.

One in 29 South African women is diagnosed with breast cancer each year. If breast cancer is diagnosed and treated early, a woman stands a good chance of recovering completely. As such, educating women about the symptoms of breast cancer and the need for regular check-ups is vital to combating the disease.

The Pink Polo event helps highlight these facts to the public and to raise funds for Reach for Recovery whose programme is to supply practical and emotional support to breast cancer patients and their families.

A quote from Edith Venter, event organiser: "This is a wonderful day filled with fabulous entertainment, South Africa's favourite celebrities, prizes and goody bags. It is an enjoyable way to show your support for breast cancer sufferers and survivors while enjoying a spectacular day out."

  • Finishing touches for BlackBerry Pink Polo

Posted on October 25, 2012 by Admin

Personal stylist and image consultant Marilize De Clercq is our Style Maestro for our 2012 BlackBerry Pink Polo Event, which is taking place this weekend. As a talented fashion expert who knows how to make anyone look their absolute best, Marilize has got some great style advice about wearing hats.

"I love wearing hats. Come rain or shine; wearing a head accessory makes you feel and look confident, vibrant and ‘oh so’ stylish!

Although some might not feel confident enough to wear a hat, even a small fascinator or hair pin can ease you into wearing YOUR hair charm with assurance and sophistication.

Having said this, recently I was introduced to the very creative team from The Little Hattery – I was blown away by their designs – providing young and old, imaginative or not, with pieces of joy! Hats are such a feminine accessory; they always makes me think of big ball gowns with a tightly pulled corset as well high teas and polo fields – women elegantly moving through the room; meeting and greeting all the attending guests.

The great thing is that The Little Hattery will once again be creating wonderful goodies for the Pink Polo on 27 October 2012. They design and make to order gorgeous hats and beautiful fascinators for events the world over.

Kerry and Dominik, owners of The Little Hattery agree: "We are having a ball and making beautiful things as we go along!" Two years from when they first started, it seems that things in hat land are looking very promising!

  • What to wear to Pink Polo

Posted on October 9, 2012 by Admin

Personal stylist and image consultant Marilize De Clercq is our Style Maestro for our 2012 Pink Polo Event. As a talented fashion expert who knows how to make anyone look their absolute best, Marilize will be posting a series of tips and trends over the next few weeks relating to Pink Polo. This week she's got some tips on what heels to wear to this chic event.

There are so many exciting trends at the moment and dressing for a cocktail or fashion event has never been so easy, with all the heavenly fabrics, daring colours and classic neutrals provided by both local and international designers. I want to highlight a few tips and share some inspiration for this year’s Pink Polo.

    Silver and Gold
One can never go wrong with bling for an event such as the Pink Polo. Metal is one of the season’s biggest trends and an elegant statement indeed. For all the obvious cool palettes, rather wear silver than yellow gold. Alternatively combine the two.

    Prints
From opulent embellished baroque to art deco graphic inspiration and whimsical prints, prints are a must-have for every wardrobe this summer. Prints are flattering because they confuse the eye. Be daring and wear print on print – one print should be busy while the second repeats at least two of the colours to connect the pieces.

    Sheer Cut-away
Sheer fabrics and lace are feminine and perfect for a summer’s day. Be careful of too much fabric around areas where you carry more weight; this will only add volume. Cut-away or cutouts should reveal areas that are allowed to grab attention: your back or your midriff; definitely a great look for the petite.

    Neon
Neon might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s something different and I dare you do step out of your comfort zone. Buy a stylish pair of shoes or cocktail bag in neon that will compliment your outfit. The easiest way to style this is to team it with neutral shades.

    Pink
Everyone is asking me whether I’m going to wear pink to the event, or whether one should one wear pink. My answer is – wear what makes you feel good. This is a day dedicated to a good cause and we want to celebrate it! If you happen to find something in a pink that suits you and fits your shape, GO FOR IT!

    Pastels
This soft palette is not for everyone. Some of us look completely washed out in pastels, but like neon colours, use them to compliment your true colours. It’s a great alternative to the usual black.

    Dresses and Slacks
Dresses and skirts are huge this year; celebrating the feminine silhouette. Yes, it is elegant…if it suits your shape! If dresses are not for you then choose one of the many slacks hanging on the shelves: wide legs, sheer palazzos, capri, printed, studded etc.

The secret to looking sexy and elegant is to be comfortable and confident in what you wear.

Where can I find a perfect outfit?

  • Make your chair a throne

Posted on October 3, 2012 by Elsje Oosthuizen

Sometimes a chair is not just a chair... it's more like a beautiful throne that adorns your home. These gorgeous chairs reflect the style of our upcoming Pink Polo Event, which will have a classic polo theme. White with touches of pink will set the tone for the decor, and we think this combination is perfect for upholstery and soft furnishings. Choose delicate pastel shades and pair them with ivory or soft grey, or even trendy metallics.

  • La Vie Est Belle

Posted on October 2, 2012 by Simone de Wet

It's only a few weeks until we host our annual BlackBerry Pink Polo Event on 27 October 2012! As always, it'll be a day of high fashion and indulgence. The dress code is polo chic, so it's time to start getting your look ready for this exciting day. Of course, no outfit is complete without a sensational perfume, and we have our eye on Lancome's new fragrance, La Vie Est Belle. This gorgeous new scent is not only pink, making it perfect for Pink Polo, but it represents the good things in life.  According to fragrantica.com, "the concept of this fragrance is centered on the idea of natural and simple beauty, freedom from conventions and the choice of once own vision of happiness. The fragrance is a kind of outlook on life, inspired by joy and pleasure in small things."

"This gourmand yet elegant composition is developed by perfumers Olivier Polge, Dominique Ropion and Anne Flipo. The final formula is the result achieved after three years of probation and 5000 versions. Iris is the key ingredient of the perfume, surrounded by orange blossoms and jasmine in the heart. The composition’s opening provides fruity flavors of black currant and pear, while the base is warm, gourmand and powdery due to almond-like accords of tonka bean, praline, patchouli and vanilla."

  • Step out with our BlackBerry Pink Polo Fashion Maestro

Posted on September 21, 2012 by Admin

Personal stylist and image consultant Marilize De Clercq is our Style Maestro for our 2012 Pink Polo Event. As a talented fashion expert who knows how to make anyone look their absolute best, Marilize will be posting a series of tips and trends over the next few weeks relating to Pink Polo. This week she's got some tips on what heels to wear to this chic event.

    Bold Steps

"If you are as crazy about shoes as I am, I'm sure that you are enjoying the multi-colour, print, details and colour-block styles this season. Not to mention a touch of neon and a modern twist on pastels.

2012 is all about statement pieces, with silver and gold taking the spotlight on the runways this spring. The metal detailing on the toe, ankle or heel is one of my favourites. It’s perfect for daytime or evening wear; a bold and eye-catching must-have.

For a couple of seasons the round toe has been the style to wear, but finally the feminine pointy shoe is back. I have always been a huge fan, especially because it is flattering for my straight boy-shape silhouette. However, if you carry your weight below, then this is not your best shoe. It will accentuate your curves, but there are plenty of alternative sexy and glamorous trends to choose from.

Besides bright colours and bling, nude is still a wardrobe essential and it’s easy to wear. A classy nude heel is the perfect shoe to wear with a dress; it'll elongate your legs and look very elegant if you prefer a classic look.

The right pair of shoes can take your outfit to a whole new level of elegance. Try something different to stand out at this year’s Pink Polo."

  • Getting ready for the Polo Season

Posted on September 6, 2012 by Admin

It's time for the Polo Season to be back in action, and Tehri Fergusson, our Equestrian Manager & Polo Administrator, can't wait! Here's what she has to say about preparations for this exciting time:

"The relief of warm sunny days after one of the wettest Winters I have ever experienced is always the best medicine to start willing on the arrival of Summer in the Boland!

Fitness and health are the number one order of the day. With all the Polo ponies back into their fitness regime, one never gets tired of watching the beauty and power of a Polo pony exercising on the track in the early morning sun. The sound of their powerful legs eating up the track while their keen eyes and ears are always pointing forward, as if they know the Polo season is on the horizon!

Polo players are sorting out their equipment that has been lying dormant for so many months, cleaning and polishing their boots and knee pads in eager anticipation of the forthcoming season. The Blackberry Pink Polo Event on 27 October is one of the major highlights on the Events calendar, and is sure to be filled with amazing polo action and skill as the Polo players show tremendous determination and team work with both their Equine and fellow Players on the field.

The sound of the mighty thoroughbred’s powerful lungs sucking up the air like a Formula One racing car with their absolute strength and ability, galloping down the polo field, will be on the mind of every Polo player as the Season commences. Polo is not just a sport – it’s a lifestyle!"

This week she's got some fabulous tips on how men can get style-savvy with their shoes.

"It is a great honor to be the Style Maestro for this year’s Pink Polo event and I would like to take you on a fashion journey of colour, what to wear and how to wear it at this year’s event, hosted at Val de Vie Polo Estate.

It is good to start with a key item that you want to focus on and create a look around the color or ‘theme’ you would like to visually communicate. For example, a striking blazer, bright trousers, printed shorts etc.

I have had a shoe fetish ever since I can remember and it if there is one thing I notice about a man, it is his shoes. I am particularly fond of the colors and prints for Spring/Summer 2012; and what better opportunity to dress your best or show your interpretation of pink in aid of breast cancer.

Pink, yellow, pastels and neon are all colours you have either heard or read about in the past few months. Yes, these are all colours that you can enjoy other than the usual blue, navy, black and grey.

There is, however, a whole new take on blue this spring and summer. It is brighter, lighter and looks amazing with this year’s 80’s comeback, neon colors. For the not-so-daring men who are looking for some change, trade your boring monotone shoelaces for trendy bright colors available at Fabiani, or I dare you to wear colourful printed socks; they do not have to match the colours of your apparel.

The difference this season is in the detail; tasseled loafers, colorful rubber soles and two-tone color brogues. These are all styles that will make a statement and be comfortable at the same time.

I am looking forward to seeing you on the 27 October 2012; please don’t hesitate to contact me for a personal styling or shopping session to look your best at this year’s Pink Polo event.

  • The Power of Pink

Posted on August 29, 2012 by Iza de Lange

Our annual BlackBerry Pink Polo Event is coming up on 27 October 2012 and it's going to be a fabulous fay of fashion, polo and pampering. The dress code is polo chic, with a focus on “shades & shoes”, and of course, pink!

An easy way to add some pink to your outfit is to find a stunning shade of pink lipstick. Pay close attention to the fashion runways this year and you'll see an explosion of pink lipstick. Pink appears to be the hue of the season, with celebrities donning the color all over the place. But you've probably also seen quite a few pink lipstick disasters. This is because pink can be a tricky colour to master when it comes to fashion. The wrong shade, the wrong lighting, or even the wrong brand-can wreak havoc on your outfit. There are some clever tricks you can use to make sure your pink explosion doesn't look like clown-wear. Here are some basic Dos and Don'ts.

    Don't...Forget to moisturize lips underneath.

Like red lips, bright pink colors have a tendency to look caked and artificial. To avoid this, make sure that your lips are smooth and moisturized underneath. Try wearing a nourishing lip balm underneath. If you don't, by the end of the day it may look as if you've dipped your lips in cake frosting.

Don't...Line the lips with a dark color.

For some reason in the late 70's and early 80's it was fashionable for African American women to line their lips with dark brown (or black) liner, filling the middle in with their color of choice. While that style has (fortunately) dissipated, there is still a tendency for some ladies to line their pink lips with a color that is in effect, too dark. Stay away from dark liners, and opt for liner in a similar shade, if you do line the lips at all.

Don't...Wear bright pink lips with bright blue eye shadow.

You may have seen that fabulous Zac Posen model sporting a freakishly stylish set of colors on her face. But that neon pink lip color and matching electric blue was more than likely all for show. That designers and stylists utilize these avant garde styles is enticing to most consumers. But translating these crazy looks is much more difficult in the harsh light of day. If you're not yet comfortable with your new pink lips, skip the blue shadow and wear eye shades that are a bit more conservative this go 'round.

Do...Wear sheer pink colors for an easy daytime look.

One way to really amp up your look for spring is to try out sheer styles. If you're still a bit apprehensive about pink lip color for your skin tone, start out with a tinted gloss. Glosses are delicate and natural looking, and don't come across as garish. Or experiment by blotting a light coat of pink lipstick, and then "smudging" it with a clear gloss you already have.

Do...Opt for "toned down " pink versions.

Many people think Bubblegum when they about pink lipstick. While this color can work in some situations, there are indeed some other shades you should consider. A muted mauve-perhaps a gloss-is another great option for day or night. Other shades to try out? Dusty pink, rose colors, pearlized pinks, and magenta.

Do...Balance delicate pink lips with big, flirty lashes.

One thing you'll notice on your favorite celebrities are pairs of luscious lashes. Because pink can be a rather "intrusive" color when worn, you can balance your cosmetic look by making sure you've got flirty eyes. Dust a neutral, iridescent shadow on lids, and finish off with some lash extensions, a pair of curly fake lashes, or some really terrific mascara.

  • Carrol Boyes - helping WWF keep Africa's iconic rhino alive

Posted on August 16, 2012 by Admin

We really admire Carrol Boyes' efforts to fight the terrible issue of rhino poaching in South Africe. During the last few years South Africa has experienced an alarming increase in rhino poaching, triggered by the illegal demand for rhino horn. The brutal rhino horn trade is run by well-resourced, sophisticated, international criminal syndicates. If WWF and its partners had not been investing in rhino conservation over the past several decades, the situation could have been far worse. Over the past two decades both white and black rhino populations have increased considerably as a result of conservation efforts. Current levels of poaching threaten to negate these gains, however, these efforts have put us in a far better position to weather this storm. WWF's Black Rhino Expansion Program has been at the centre of these efforts. Since 2003 seven new black rhino populations have been created on about 150,000 hectares of habitat. Nearly 120 black rhino have been translocated to these sites. WWF galvanizes its efforts around a five pronged approach aimed at strategic parts of the poaching value chain. WWF will continue to improve its understanding of trade dynamics in importing countries and to find ways to influence demand; improve bilateral co-operation between South Africa and importing countries such as Vietnam; improve the judicial and forensic processes (through capacity development as well as expert and hardware support); build community buffers around key rhino populations; and continue to build resilient rhino populations by improving management of existing populations as well establishing new founder populations in secure locations.

Carrol Boyes’ campaign helps support WWF-SA and its Rhino Conservation Work. By supporting WWF's rhino conservation work, we help to stop the criminal elements plundering our national heritage and endangering a global asset. Together, we can help keep Africa's iconic rhino alive.

During the last few years South Africa has experienced an alarming increase in rhino poaching. WWF works on two fronts to help rhinos - keeping them safe and growing their numbers.  Carrol Boyes supports WWF and its Rhino Conservation Work, and helps to keep Africa's iconic rhino alive.

Carrol Boyes will donate 25% of the proceeds from the sale of these Business Card Holders to the WWF.

In keeping with the brand's commitment to the greater good, Carrol Boyes is also a sponsor of our BlackBerry Pink Polo event in October, which is held in aid of breast cancer.

  • SA Polo Team excels at the Coronation Cup

Posted on July 25, 2012 by Admin

We are so proud of the outstanding performance of the SA Polo Team at the Coronation Cup at Windsor Great Park on 22 July! The team played against England and as the youngest international team, they truly excelled on the day.

Under the captaincy of 23-year-old Nachi du Plessis, the Equus & Co sponsored South Africans (rec 1) also included Chris Mackenzie, Jean du Plessis and Tom de Bruin- four players under the age of 25 – not only making them the youngest international team ever to have taken to Smith’s Lawn on International Day, but also an indication of the young polo talent that South Africa, as a country, is producing. After the match, David Woodd, Chief Executive of the Hurlingham Polo Association was quick to praise the South Africa team saying: “It was a great privilege for England to play a young go-getting South African team.”

If you missed the game, you can check it out on Hurlingham Media.

  • Captain's report: Looking back on the 2011–2012 Polo Season

Posted on May 7, 2012 by Admin

The 2011–2012 Polo Season has been a frantically busy and successful one, including six 0 and 2 Goal Tournaments and chukkas being played four times a week! These Low Goal Tournaments were very well supported by visiting teams and we were thrilled to host Olifantskoop from the West Coast, Maremmana from Hermanus and Cape Town Polo Club from Melkbos.

We held 3 Exhibition matches during the course of the season, namely the Bentley at the beginning of December, The Veuve Clicquot at the end of February and finally, the innovative and exciting Five Nations Invitational Tournament held at the end of March. The Five Nations was the brain child of Martin Venter who considered the tournament’s viability during the middle of last year with an idea of inviting representatives from Pakistan, England, Zimbabwe, South Africa and the Netherlands to compete in an Invitational tournament at Val de Vie. His vision was realized and seven days of exciting polo were played, drawing large and enthusiastic crowds. Val de Vie was delighted to host a visiting side from Pakistan, including the Pakistani Ambassador. The Netherlands were supported by the Dutch Ambassador and his wife on the final Saturday and Fatima Chohan, Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, gave a short but inspiring speech about sport and her first introduction to polo at the Tournament. SA were the deserved winners, the winning team comprising of Tom de Bruin (Captain), Kevin Rixon, Martin Venter and Joseph Bron with “Britain” coming a close second.

Educational Chukkas have become a popular and very social part of learning the game of Polo and follow on after polo lessons given by Kevin on either Tuesdays or Thursdays during the season. Anybody who is interested in learning more about the game and how to play it must contact Tehri at the Polo Office for booking lessons with Kevin and joining in the Educational Chukkas – everybody’s welcome!

The Polo Season is sadly drawing to a close as Winter beckons. The last planned match was on 5 May, but it will give the horses a well-deserved rest! The number of new people playing polo and the number of tournaments being played is growing faster in Cape Town than anywhere else in the country and next season’s Fixture List is already in progress… we can’t wait!

PS: To all residents – Diana and I have bought at Val de Vie and are looking forward to meeting as many potential players and spectators as possible!

  • The 2011 Bentley Polo Invitational

Posted on December 8, 2011 by Admin

On Friday 25 November Bentley, Veuve Clicquot, Pirelli, Breitling and LIVEOUTLOUD partnered in an event like no other at the Val de Vie Wine and Polo Estate in Paarl, Western Cape. The day’s proceedings consisted of an exclusive Polo tournament between four sponsored teams as well as a glitzy unveiling ceremony and cocktail celebration for the much anticipated Bentley Continental GTC during the evening.

Invited VIP guests were given access to the exclusive estate for the polo tournament, which saw a round-robin clash between four professional polo teams. Guests were welcomed to relax under the Veuve Clicquot umbrellas or enjoy a cold Peroni at the bar whilst watching the games against the backdrop of the Paarl Mountain Range. The start of the tournament was commenced with Kristina Diehl from Bentley UK throwing the opening ball onto the pitch from the passenger seat of the new Continental GTC’s predecessor before they raced away from a slew of horses clashing for the ball.

Michael Eilertsen, CEO of LIVEOUTLOUD explains: ‘The 2011 Bentley Polo Invitational has positioned itself as the pioneer event before LIVEOUTLOUD hosts the inaugural 2012 Beach Polo Festival in Camps Bay, Cape Town. This festival is set to become one of South Africa’s premier events and we look forward to breaking ground on this truly remarkable and original concept.’

The 2011 Bentley Polo Invitational culminated with guests being entertained by the vehicles on show; a jazz band playing smooth melodic tunes, and drew to a close as the sun set behind the mountains with as much style and sophistication as the vehicle itself, a day encapsulating both sporting and luxury living.

  • Festive greetings from Val de Vie Polo

Posted on December 7, 2011 by tehri

Holiday time is approaching and I am sure everyone can’t wait for the long awaited festive season the lies ahead of us.
The polo club will be closed from the 19 December and will re-open on the 4 January.

The ponies are going to enjoy a mid season break, which will give them time to re charge those batteries, put on a bit of condition and get them ready for the busy polo that awaits them next year.

We have had a great season so far, the polo and skill that has been exceptional and we are expecting a number of overseas visitors in the new year.

We have sadly said goodbye to a very important Val De Vie personality, Toffee. He was a very precious and dear little chap. He has moved to a big farm in Stellenbosch, with huge lush fields that would be the dream of any pony, to be a companion to another horse. We are also sadly saying goodbye to a very special polo pony, Angel, who has been with us since July 2011. She has unfortunately become blind in her one eye and can’t play polo anymore. She will be going back to Natal to retire on a farm with her previous owners.

We have had a number of new ponies arriving at Val De Vie over the past couple of months. We also welcomed Jason Drew s three ponies, Whistler, Charlie and Hunk at the beginning of October, Gavin Watson’s two ponies, Fernanda and Pepita that arrived at the beginning of November and we welcomed Joseph Bronn s three polo ponies that arrived on the 6 December all the way from Natal. Girlie, BMW and Jura stepped out of the truck late Tuesday afternoon and settled into the Val De Vie way of life as if they had been here before.

The Bentley Polo was held on Friday 25 November, with all the top polo players from around the province coming together to display their talents and skill on the polo field. This was truly a chart topper of an event with the prestigious Bentleys everywhere added in the mixture with exceptional polo, what more could you ask for?

Val De Vie was very proud to sponsor a Championship class at the South African Dressage Championships that were held in Stellenbosch from the 14 till the 20 November. We have a number of talented Dressage riders from Val De Vie that will start competing in shows next year such as Karen Dormehl on her young horses Kontikki and Frosty Kiss, Stacey de Villiers on her horse Dallas and Michelle Evert riding her new polo pony, True Rhythm. Hopefully all of these riders will be competing at the next SA Dressage Championships and we can offer as much support to them along the way as possible.

That’s all from us at the Polo club for now, wishing you all the best for the holidays!

    Tehri

  • Glenellen Show Jumping 26 November 2011

Posted on December 1, 2011 by Admin

The Western Province Show Jumping Championships where held at Glenellen Farm in Hout Bay over the weekend of the 25, 26 and 27 November. There where riders from all over the country that travelled the 1000km + to compete for the title, Western Province Adult Show Jumping Champion. The riders who compete in the big championship class are tested over fences that can get up to 1.40m high, over a course of 12 plus jumps ranging from water jumps to a triple combination with one stride in between. Jumping those heights is the ultimate test between every horse/rider combination. The final result was in first place Jeanne Engela and Liam Stevens in second place.

Tehri travelled through to the Championships on the Saturday morning with her horse, Alfonso. It was their first show together as a team and they competed in the 90cm class. Tehri was very pleased with her talented young horse, being his first time in that arena, he did not put a foot/hoof wrong.

We are looking forward to an exciting new year in 2012 with all our competitive riders, we will be sure to keep you updated with all the show results.

  • Perfect the Polo look

Posted on October 4, 2011 by Admin

Polo is not only famous for being an exciting and intriguing sport - it's also associated with elegant fashion and crisp, elegant styling. Ready to pull off the polo look with aplomb? Here are some fashion tips from Cameron Silver, owner of DECADES vintage boutiques.

    Polo style tips for Women:
    • Wear a hat and wear it proud. The bigger the better.
    • Shoes need to be sensible and stylish. Go for a wedge and avoid a stiletto heel and avoid sinking into the lawn.
    • Prints are your new best friend. A floral tea dress paired with a cashmere cardigan creates a great sophisticated, retro look that's very Polo-esque.
    • Dress the part: Throw on a pair of jodhpurs into your riding boots with a crisp polo shirt. Don't be surprised if you end up on a horse, however!
    • This isn't a night club - leave the all-black wardrobe for the after-party!

    Polo style tips for Men:
    • Ask yourself, "What would Cary Grant wear?" Buy a grown up suit and dress to impress.
    • Step out of the box and add some color to your wardrobe. An Etro print tie or pocket square with a colorful shirt exudes a bit of English-inspired eccentrics.
    • It’s polo after all: When all else fails, a fresh pique polo shirt, slim flat front khakis, a cashmere pullover, and a gold Rolex will work wonders. Top it off with a fedora and aviators for a sense of mystery.

  • Outstanding Results at the Interschools Team Championships

Posted on September 26, 2011 by Admin

Three of our young and talented riders competed in the Interschools Team Championships at the Evergreen Stables over the weekend of the 24 and 25 September. Tristene Joubert, Jaydee Joubert, Bronwyn Haasbroek and Erin Pape made Val De Vie very proud with their turn out, skill and overall results at the show. On the Saturday, Tristene and Jaydee competed in the Dressage classes scoring over 53% for their tests. This is a very good score considering that Jaydee is a National Polo Cross Player and Wild Cat, her horse is in fact a Polo Cross/Polo Pony.

On the Sunday, Erin competed in the 50cm Individual Competition, but unfortunately took a pole in the Jump off. Then she showed us all what she is made of and produced the most beautiful clear round in the Team Championship Class on her pony, Leo. Erin s team (Bridge House) ended up coming second overall. Tristene competed in the 60cm individual and produced a brilliant double clear but was not fast enough in the jump off to be in the top 4 places. We were very happy with her result, as it was also her first outing with her new horse, Edo. Jaydee competed in the individual 60cm competition and had a cracking round and ended up receiving third place. In the team event, Jaydee’s team (Girls High) ended up winning the 60cm Team Championship!

We would like to congratulate the Val De Vie Riders! We are very proud of you.

  • Celebrating success at the Milnerton Riding Club Spring Festival

Posted on September 13, 2011 by Admin

On Saturday 10 September, Karen Dormehl and her beautiful warm blood gelding, Kontiki, left Val De Vie early in the morning to set out for Kintiki’s first showing show (Kontiki is only four years old). We were very proud when we learnt that Kontiki came first in two of his classes on the weekend. He competed in the Milnerton Riding Club Spring Festival in the Best Walk and Best Trot categories. He was up against a large group of older and more experienced horses but managed to prove that he was the champion at the end of the day. Well done to Karen Dormehl, proud owner of Kontiki. It is very exciting and we can't wait to see him back in the show ring.

  • Get the party started with Pink Pigeon Rum

Posted on August 31, 2011 by Admin

Val de Vie is thrilled that Pink Pigeon is one of the sponsors of our upcoming Pink Polo Event. This Vanilla Spiced Mauritian Rum is named after the rare and endangered species of bird found only on the magnificent jewel island of Mauritius. It is the first pure premium spiced rum from the island to be blended with “Black Gold”, which is the finest hand-pollinated and hand-picked natural vanilla from the islands of Madagascar and Reunion. Although complex in flavour, Pink Pigeon is delicious to drink and distilled five times with the purest of spirit.

Here is a recipe for their signature cocktail, the Pink Pigeon Mojito:

    Ingredients:
1 ½ shots of Pink Pigeon Premium rum
½ shot of Giffard vanilla syrup or sugar if you don’t have
    10 Fresh mint leaves
    4 wedges of lime
    1 shot of Cranberry Juice

    Method:
First focus on muddling the lime wedges, mint leaves and sugar in the glass of service. Then add in your Pink Pigeon rum, top half the glass with crushed ice and stir with a spoon to mix and chill. Top up the glass with crushed ice and finish of by adding the cranberry juice.

  • The latest polo news: What's happening in Winter

Posted on August 18, 2011 by tehri

As the start to the new polo season is on the horizon, we are getting ready for what should be the best, most exciting polo season Val De Vie has see yet. With the growing numbers of people wanting to become members of the Val de Vie polo club every week, and our stables at full capacity, we are all very excited and can’t wait for the season to start in October.

I thought I would share a little information about what we, the Polo Club and Stable personal have been up to all winter. With the end of Polo Season at the beginning of 2011, the polo ponies have all had a well, long deserved rest. They have had the opportunity to re charge their batteries, relax, get as fat as possible and as furry as possible. The grooms and Polo Team have been keeping a close eye on them, making sure they get sufficient feed, love and attention.

The horses have been kept to a very structured schedule, being creatures of habit, they do not adjust to drastic changes very well. So we have to make sure that they get their feed at specific times in the morning and afternoon. Horses mainly get two meals a day . With drastic cases with horses either being drastically under weight, or at times of excess pressure and hard work, they can get up to 4 meals a day. The stomach structure is such that they need to have sufficient grazing all day long. Without this grazing, the stomach acids can cause serious damage which can lead to serious medical complications and stomach alsers. With the lack of grazing down at the sand paddock, we supplement the horses grazing with a product called oat hay.

We have also had a few more livery clients joining us over these past months, I would like to welcome them. Karen Lewis who has just recently purchased her new Polo Pony Angel. Stacey and Kaylee, they came to us from Franschoek with their three beautiful warm blood mares, Star Bucks, Dallas and Moet. Stacey is also a qualified Equine Physiotherapist, so if you are interested in having her look at your horse please feel free to contact me for more information. Tessa Moxon who also moved from Franschoek with her Polo Ponies and young warm blood mare that she will be training as a dressage horse. The Anderson Family, Anuchka, Albert and Sharron and their lovely ponies Trixi and Leo. Anuchka has represented South Africa in Show Jumping up in Johannesberg. Candice Starke who will be with us at the end of the month with her two very talented show jumpers Just London and Chase. Candice was competing in the 1.45m show jumping classes last year. We are very excited to have such top quality horses and riders at our yard. I am sure that the Val De Vie flag will be flying high at many of the big horse shows locally and nationwide in the months to come.

I would also like to welcome Erin and Marilyn Young. Erin has recently joined us from another stable yard in Cape Town, she is leasing a lovely pony from the Anderson Family, Leo. Erin is a very talented and gutsy rider and we can t wait for her to start competing and going to shows on her lovely pony.

The Polo Ponies have also just received their second African Horse Sickness Vaccination. We vaccinate the horses once a year during the “off season” . The purpose of this vaccination is to strengthen the horses immunity against this deadly viral disease which kills thousands of horses around South Africa every year. The vaccination consists of 2 injections 3 weeks apart. There are two types of AHS ( African Horse Sickness) that the horses can contract, Dunkop and Dikkop. I have inserted some additional information with regards to AHS below.

    WHAT IS AFRICAN HORSE SICKNESS?
African horse sickness (AHS) is a highly infectious non-contagious, vector born viral disease affecting all species of Equidae. It is classified as an Orbivirus of the Reoviridae family of which there are 9 serotypes. All serotypes (1-9) are distributed throughout South Africa, although there is a variation in their temporal distribution. It is endemic to (occurs naturally on) the African continent, and is characterised by respiratory and circulatory damage, accompanied by fever and loss of appetite.

    Host and Vector
Animals affected are, all breeds of horses (mortality rate of 70-90%), mules and donkeys. Wild life Equine species (Zebras) are resistant to the disease. The vector host, Culicoides midge, spreads AHS virus.

How do horses contract the disease?
AHS does not spread directly from one horse to another, but is transmitted by the Culicoides midge, which becomes infected when feeding on other infected equidae. It occurs mostly in the warm, rainy season when midges are plentiful, and disappears after frost, when the midges die. Most animals become infected in the period associated with sunset and sunrise, when the midges are most active.

    Symptoms
The disease manifests in three ways, namely the lung form, the heart form and the mixed form. The lung (dunkop) form is characterised in the following manner:

    • very high fever (up to 41 degrees).
    • difficulty in breathing, with mouth open and head hanging down.
    • frothy discharge may pour from the nose.
    • sudden onset of death.
    • very high death rate (90%).

The heart (dikkop) form is characterised in the following manner:

    • fever, followed by swelling of the head and eyes.
    • in severe cases, the entire head swells (“dikkop”).
    • loss of ability to swallow and possible colic symptoms may occur.
    • terminal signs include bleeding (of pinpoint size) in the membranes of the mouth and eyes.
    • Slower onset of death, occurring 4 to 8 days after the fever has started.
    • Lower death rate (50%).

The Polo Ponies will start exercising in September so they can lose their winter “fat layer” and get into shape for Polo Season that starts in October. I am sure many of the Polo Players will also be exercising to rid themselves of the excess “winter warmth layers” that have accumulated over the past couple of months. The horses exercise program will consist mainly of walking for the first couple of days around the track located around the stick n ball field and then we will gradually increase the exercise speed and distance as the weeks go by, so the Ponies will be sleek, fit galloping machines come polo season. As for the Polo Players, we have the gym and Mieke! There are many exciting events, tournaments and family days planned so be sure to keep a close eye on the Events calendar. Polo lessons and educational chukkas with Kevin Rixon will also start in October.

  • The Val De Vie Cape Town Cup 2011

Posted on March 9, 2011 by tehri

The Val de Vie Cape Town Cup was recently hosted in the elegant surroundings of the Val de Vie Estate utilising the estate’s world-class polo fields and luxurious club house facilities.

The line up for the 6-Goal tournament saw a number of international players from Argentina, Holland, Italy, Germany, Zimbabwe, the UK, India, and South Africa competing, bringing an exciting flavour to the matches, lunches and the prize giving Val de Vie Polo Club Captain Rolf Thielen said that he was particularly pleased with how well the tournament was received and how much support there had been for the tournament had been throughout.

This is the third time the Cape Town Cup has been hosted at Val de Vie. Western Cape Polo Chairman Pawel Kanigowski originally conceived the cup in 2007 and with the support of the clubs in Cape Town and Boland areas it has now become and exciting annual fixture. The format of the tournament was a round robin over three days with a subsidiary final and a final on day 4. The four teams, Lanquedoc, Maremmana – Central Academy, Cape Town Polo Club and Val de Vie were in fierce competition from day one.

Val de Vie walked away as the winners of the trophy but it was a hard fought competition. The Lanquedoc team of Martin Hartmann took second place. Best Playing Pony went to Cold Steel, owned by Tom de Bruin, who also took the coveted Most Valued Player award.

Val de Vie Polo Club President Allesandro Balestri de Verrand thanked SAPA Executive Director Clive Peddle, the visiting and local patrons as well Martin Venter (Chairman of the Val de Vie Group) and sponsor of POLO SA magazine. Alessandro mentioned that without the support of patrons such as Pawel Kanigowski, Peter Stuart, Martin Hartmann and Ankur Mishra polo in the Cape would not have been able to grow as quickly and successfully as it has.

The Cape Town Cup is set to grow to an 8 team two week event over the next few years and the interest and excitement has left us all with bated breath for next years gala performance.

We also look forward to seeing you join us for another exciting polo event coming soon. The Veuve Clicquot Masters is to be held at Val de Vie for the first time this year on Sunday 17th April and is set to become the jewel of the South African Polo Season, expect a sophisticated day amongst South Africa’s socialites, VIPs and celebrities, so get your designer dresses ready!

Two ticket types are available for purchase through Computicket – The Polo Club at R350, which includes a bottle of wine and a light lunch on arrival and The Masters VIP Lounge at R950, which includes an array of delicious foods, Veuve Clicquot Champagne and a selection of Val de Vie's award winning wines.

  • The Final Score for SA-India in the BMW International Polo Series

Posted on March 6, 2011 by Admin

South Africa’s passionate and glamorous polo community witnessed one of the world’s most iconic polo nations in action when India toured South Africa this weekend as part of the BMW International Polo Series.

On Saturday, 26 February, the lush polo fields of Val de Vie Estate in the magnificent Paarl Franschhoek Valley hosted a classic encounter between India and South Africa.

A day of elegance between man and beast was matched by a host of celebrities and VIPs reveling in the finest Val de Vie wines, gourmet food, and a display of the latest BMW vehicles.

“Polo is an exciting sport, and we are proud to be associated with a sport that so epitomises excellence and with which we have a long and successful relationship with. People marvel at the ability of man and horse to achieve such perfect unity, and BMW shares this drive for creating perfect partnerships in the pursuit of a passion,” said Guy Kilfoil, General Manager: Communications and Public Affairs at BMW South Africa.

India brought with them a rich legacy in the sport dating back to medieval times, and which has earned the country the status of being the cradle of modern polo.

“The prestige of this particular contest is highlighted by the fact that India rarely tours South Africa, having done so on only a handful of occasions in the past 20 years,” said Clive Peddle, the Executive Director of the South African Polo Association.

“But equally important is the overall enjoyment of a wonderful event. India are a very hospitable nation and the South Africans were treated with five star luxury on their recent trip..”

Now in its third year, the BMW International Polo at Val de Vie has become one of the most keenly anticipated events on the Cape Town social calendar. It is arguably one of the most sleek, glamorous and sought-after tickets in town.

This year’s event was attended by Cape Town’s glitterati, including the likes of Roxy Louw, Lyndall Jarvis, Lieschen Botes, Arno & Melanie Carstens, and Mark Bayly.

“The BMW International Polo at Val de Vie is an elegant affair where Cape Town’s elite enjoyed an exclusive, elegant and relaxing day of Polo,” said Michelle van Eyden of SAIL, the Executive Promoter of the BMW International Polo at Val de Vie as well as the highly successful L’Ormarins Queens Plate held recently.

The final score of the incredibly exciting game was 7 to 10 for South Africa.

  • 8-Goal update

Posted on December 20, 2010 by christo

Val de Vie impressed again, yesterday, in the SA Open Polo Championship, currently being played at Plettenbergbay, by winning their second match in the 8-goal division.

The match was played at Stonefield and the stronger Stonefield side had a 1-Goal advantage in handicap.

Despite this, Val de Vie won in a hard fought nail biting match which had the fans on the edges of their chairs up to the last ten seconds.

Val de Vie Polo Club President Alessandro played well above his handicap and saved the team a number of times with critical and hard fought actions.  Gareth Evans, the professional 6-Goal player, showed his mettle time and again as he led the team to a tight 8 vs. 8 ½ goal victory.

Val de Vie Club Captain, Rolf Thielen, expressed his satisfaction with the victory, especially in the light of the fact that team have not played together before and the professionals Brad Mallet and Gareth Evans were combining very well, with Alessandro exploiting every crack in the Stonefield lines.

Val de Vie has won both matches thus far and will meet favourites, Tswene Lodge, on Tuesday.

The SA Open has been plagued with some rain but forecast are sunny for the next few days and lots of polo action is guaranteed.

We wish Val de Vie Polo Club best of luck!

  • Coaching the coaches

Posted on April 8, 2010 by Admin

John Lister, Polo Manager and Coach at Val de Vie, was delighted to recently attend a Hurlingham Polo Association (HPA) clinic hosted by the Free State Polo Association in conjunction with SAPA (the South African Polo Association). Held at the lovely Uitgedacht Polo Club, the three-day “coach the coaches” clinic was headed by David Morley, an official HPA Team Coach, and forms part of SAPA’s goal to establish internationally recognised coaching qualifications for South Africa.

The clinic was the first of its kind in the country and awarded successful participants with official SAPA coaching qualifications, endorsed by the HPA. Not only will this ensure the quality and reputability of South African polo, it will also help to boost South African polo tourism, as these qualifications will meet travel insurance company criteria for foreign players wishing to enjoy polo holidays in the country.

As a major figure in the world of polo, David Morley quickly earned the respect and admiration of all participants. David comes from a distinguished equestrian family and has established an illustrious career in polo, horse dealing and show jumping. He has been involved in the HPA’s coaching movement since its inception and today he sits on the HPA coaching committee. Furthermore, he is one of only six people currently holding the highest coaching qualification granted by the HPA, which qualifies him to take a team to a tournament representing the HPA or England.

A host of other key polo professionals were present at the clinic, including Clive Peddle (SAPA Executive Director), Denton Osler (FSPA President) and Angus Yeats (FSPA Vice President). In addition, a “Coaching Committee” was elected by the participants, with representation from four provinces, as follows: Stephen Erskine (Natal), Craig James (Highveld), John Lister (Cape), Denton Osler (Free State and Chairman) and of course David Morley himself.

The clinic offered a mix of theoretical and practical work, covering topics such as polo riding techniques, tactical play and teaching methods. Participants also reviewed the new HPA rules thoroughly and all took the two part umpire test. The event was also the perfect opportunity for participants to simply improve their game, as well as to catch up with old friends and make new connections. A wonderful time was had by all, and the polo team at Val de Vie certainly looks forward to similar events in the future!

  • A closer look at Val de Vie and International BMW Polo

Here's a glimpse at the glamorous word of Val de Vie and International BMW Polo, brough to you by the talented Simoné!

  • A glamorous day at Val de Vie

Posted on March 4, 2010 by Admin

Cape Town’s finest, including celebrities Ryk Neethling, Ard Matthews, Leanne Liebenberg, Vanessa Haywood and Joe Pietersen, enjoyed a thrilling day of Polo at the BMW International Polo Series on Sunday. It was here that they witnessed South Africa’s superb win against Italy (14 to 5 goals) in the main match of the day, whilst relaxing with fine wine and exquisite food in the stunning grounds of Val de Vie.

The South African Polo Association and BMW proudly celebrated 21 years of association this year which bought added significance to the 2010 event. This alliance continues to provide the foundation for development and promotion of polo within South Africa.

This equestrian sport, widely regarded as the Sport of Kings and the oldest mounted sport in the world, has a dedicated and loyal local following, but as a result of BMW’s passion and support over the past 21 years and polished attention to detail by Event Promoters SAIL, the occasion is fast forming the basis of annual international Polo games to be held in the Western Cape.

“For BMW, our long-standing association with Polo is clearly in support of the core values of the BMW brand,” explains Guy Kilfoil, General Manager: Communications & Public Affairs at BMW South Africa. “Our brand represents dynamism, exclusivity, innovation and aesthetics in equal measure and the sport of polo certainly mirrors each of these characteristics. More importantly, as anyone who has watched a polo match will testify to, the sound of thundering hooves and the thrill of robust competition delivers spectators the very emotion that BMW embodies in each of its products – pure unadulterated Joy.”

  • The BMW International at Val de Vie

The BMW International Polo Series was hosted on Saturday, 27 February at Val de Vie, and what a day it was! South Africa took on Italy in an exciting match that resulted in a 14-5 victory for our national team. As one of the highlights on the social calendar, the event was attended by hundreds of spectators and highlights South Africa's growing interest in the king of sports.

  • Celebrating the success of the Carrol Boyes Ladies Cup

Posted on February 23, 2010 by Admin

We're delighted to share some of the feedback we've had regarding the Carrol Boyes Ladies Cup, which was thoroughly enjoyed by participants and spectators alike!

    Feedback from Tanya Ortlepp:

Dear Jo, John and Val de Vie Management team,

Just a short note to thank you for inviting us to play in the Carol Boyes Ladies Tournament. It was an exceptionally well organised event and we have been fielding queries from other Natal Ladies who have heard about the tournament and the exciting outcome. We would like to extend our thanks to the sponsors for supporting polo and making the tournament possible at this 'polo destination'. It would be a coup for ladies polo if this Val de Vie tournament became a feature in the South African polo calender. To Val de Vie and the Listers, thank you for your ponies, hospitality and the enormous effort that went into planning and coordinating this prestigious event.

    Kind regards,

    Tanya Ortlepp

    Feedback from Allison's saddlery:

The tournament was so well run from start to finish. After not playing for 5 months it took us all a while to settle in. The games were a lot harder and faster than any of us anticipated, with Bongani Mountain Lodge and Val de Vie coming out winners.

Jo organised a fantastic cocktail party at the Sabrage and it was great getting to know all the other players.

I would hate to think what Jo could put together if she was given a year to organise this event. Putting a tournament of this calibre together in a month is incredible. An extremely professional tournament in which we were made to feel like royalty. Carrol Boyes was the overall sponsor and each team had their own individual sponsors, Bongani Mountain Lodge, Kila Kitu, Val de Vie and Britesmile.

Jackie Mackenzie deservedly won MVP and I hope that she continues to play polo in the Cape to help strengthen and grow their ladies.

On behalf of the KZN ladies I would like to thank all the sponsors, pony lenders, Deon and Julia for their hospitality and John and Jo Lister for a fantastic tournament. We hope to be back next year!

  • The Carrol Boyes Ladies Cup - A phenomenal success!

Posted on February 19, 2010 by Admin

Val de Vie was thrilled to host the Carrol Boyes Ladies Cup from 12-14 February 2010. As the first ladies tournament to take place in Cape Town, the event is not just a milestone for polo in Cape Town and South Africa, but also for the sport itself, signalling the growing popularity of ladies polo around the world.

Four teams competed for the cup, namely Britesmile, Kilakitu, Bongani Mountain Lodge and Patron Properties/Val de Vie. After a weekend of pure polo excitement, it was the home team, Patron Properties/Val de Vie, that won the title. A dazzling cup designed by Carrol Boyes was awarded to the winning team, while a blanket was presented to the best pony of the championship, Jezze Belle, belonging to Julia Pilbeam. In the meantime, Jacquie Mackenzie, from Plettenburg, was elected as MVP of the tournament.

A very special thanks to all the pony lenders who made the event possible, as well as to the following sponsors:

Carrol Boyes, Britesmile, Kila Kitu Polo, Bongani Mountain Lodge, Val de Vie – sponsored by Patron Properties, Cape Veterinary Supplies, Equifeeds, Nuvision, Beautiful Homes, Totally Animal, Spurwing Feeds, Livingpolo.com, Allison’s Saddlery, Equus, Platinum Hair and Beauty

  • The Carrol Boyes Ladies Cup

Val de Vie Wine and Polo Estate is proud to announce the Carrol Boyes Ladies Cup – the first Ladies Polo Tournament to be held in Cape Town! Organised by Val de Vie, the event will be played on the 12–14th of February.

Ladies represent the largest growing numbers of new players around the world and a few are making it to the high goal range. We are very excited about this event and have received overwhelming support from players and sponsors alike.

The principal sponsor of the event is Carrol Boyes, the acclaimed South African designer who is internationally renowned for her handmade pieces of functional art. Using pewter, aluminium and stainless steel in her designs, Carrol Boyes creates a range of items that are distinctive and uniquely South African. Once the design process has been perfected by Carrol herself, each piece is produced by hand in Limpopo Province. The designs are available throughout South Africa and in more than 28 countries over the world.

Team sponsors include Britesmile, Bongani Bush Lodge, Kilakitu and Patron Properties, while other sponsors are Nuvision, Silveroaks Stud, Allison’s Saddlery, Beautiful Homes, Totally Animal and Spurwing feeds.

The majority of the ladies are from the Cape Town environs, except for five players who will travel from Natal and Plettenburg Bay. One man will play in each team and these will be local players.

Val de Vie would like to thank the players who have lent ponies to make this event possible.

  • Polo in Cape Town is rocking – literally!

Posted on December 14, 2009 by Admin

The Val de Vie Wine and Polo Estate recently hosted a unique combination of polo and rock, all on the same day at the same venue! Over 3000 spectators, with VIP passes to The Killers concert, enjoyed the action of two exhibition polo matches prior to the concert. This was the largest crowd to watch polo in the Cape Town area and the spectators were very enthusiastic in their support.

There's no doubt that polo is big news in Cape Town. The sport is a new addition to the “things to do” in Cape Town and with world-class facilities at the Val de Vie Wine and Polo Estate, polo is rapidly becoming a must-do and Val de Vie the place to be seen! With the Sabrage Polo Bar and Restaurant offering welcoming hospitality and an unrivalled spot to watch a match, be sure not to miss the action!

The teams were made up from local regular players at the Val de Vie Polo Club. The first game for the newcomers to polo was between The Romans and Val de Vie, with the hosts keeping victory. The final match between Soetendal Estate (Wellington) and Val de Vie was fiercely contested and had the crowds on their feet in support of their favourite team.

We look forward to many more successful events at Val de Vie Wine and Polo Estate. Don’t miss the next interclub monthly competition on the 22nd to 24th of January 2010. This will be a warm up to the February matches and promises to offer some very competitive polo!

Less than an hour away from Cape Town, Val de Vie is the perfect place to discover the exciting world of polo. Club practices are held during the week and every weekend. For more information about times or lessons at the Polo School, kindly contact Jo on polo@valdevie.co.za.

    See you there!

  • Introducing Devu, our furry friend

Posted on December 14, 2009 by Admin

If you visit Val de Vie, you're sure to meet a small personality who is very much part of the stables and polo fields. Her name is "Amadevu" (which means moustaches in Zulu) and she is such a lively little character!

Devu was found at the SPCA waiting for the right home, and she has since adopted John as the most important person in her life (followed closely by the bakkie which allows her to get around and check on the daily activities much quicker than her small legs would allow).

Devu is always around the stables, keeping an eye out for rats and mice and also accustoming the horses to having a dog around. During chukkas she sits under a chair and guards the drinks and snacks, and once everyone is sitting down she likes to find a comfy spot from where she hopes to share some snacks (although she's not so keen on the strange stuff we drink...). She often forms part of the after polo entertainment by galloping in wild circles around the chairs to expend some energy.
Luckily on hot days the sprinkler irrigation offers a great way to cool down.

Very popular with every guest at the polo school, Devu is rapidly becoming one of the most photographed dogs in the world, as every visitor lines her up in the lens! She even joined Jo in the Polo SA Magazine.

Devu loves children - the smaller the better - and has been known to invite herself to parties and weddings in search of small company. As a matter of safety and hygiene dogs are not allowed around the stables or on the polo fields, and Devu is very quick to point out transgressors of this rule! She is not a dog, of course...

Homeowner and mother of Tahila, Maureen, has appointed herself as Devu's fairy godmother and keeps a special eye out for her!

  • The Polo SA launch at Val de Vie

Posted on November 4, 2009 by Admin

Val de Vie was proud to be the venue for the elegant and stylish launch of Polo SA, an exciting new publication for South African Polo. Endorsed by the South African Polo Association and produced by Quantam publishers, it will be published on a quarterly basis and distributed amongst polo players.

The event was a phenomenal success, boasting a spectacular crowd turn out on a perfect Spring day. Dressed in Gatsby era inspired attire, guests enjoyed a relaxed picnic lunch on the terraces, the perfect spot to watch a game of polo and take in the views of the winelands countryside. Prizes were awarded for the best dressed guests, and there was also a charity auction in aid of the SPCA.

The event saw a record turn out of polo players: no less than three four chukka matches were played, as well as one lifestyle match for newcomers to polo. Nearly 30 polo players entered, a sure sign that polo around Cape Town is growing at an incredible rate. There is no doubt that this promises to become an annual event!

The main game (or final match) between Val de Vie and Cape Hunt was a fast and flowing game. The teams competed to win a coveted trophy designed by Federico Aliverti of Aliverti jewelry. The hosts were off to an exciting start with a goal by Charl du Plessis from the line out ending the 2nd chukka with 3 / 1 to the hosts. But the experience of the visiting side rallied the Cape Hunt team and they went on to draw and finally win by one goal in the 4th chukka. The final score was 5 / 4 to Cape Hunt and Polo Club. This trophy promises to be hotly contested again next year at Val de Vie!

All games were watched over by professional umpire, Guy Benson, who held a coaching clinic on the Saturday to explain the rules of the sport and how to umpire. He even joined to play some chukkas with everyone! It was a fantastic learning opportunity and a wonderful chance to play with a past high goal player. Guy Benson has played internationally and represented South Africa several times. Having this kind of professional input is essential in improving our polo and allows more players to be exposed to learning and keeping up with polo rules and regulations.

David Hasselfhoff was recently in the UK where he had to immerse himself in British culture for a new reality series. Learning to play polo was an essential part of his visit, and goes to show how popular polo is becoming all around the world.

  • Introducing Mischka, our new team member!

Posted on October 22, 2009 by Admin

Val de Vie Polo is delighted to have a new member on the team! Mischka was rescued off the streets of Cape Town where she used to pull a cart. She was confiscated as she was very thin and overloaded, and rescued by the Cart Horse Association who do wonderful work in educating and rescuing cart horses. Val de Vie Polo has adopted Mischka from the SPCA and we hope that she will enjoy a long and happy life with us.

She is in much better condition, but needs to do some muscle building as she was very thin. Once she is out of her compulsory rest period after her vaccinations, she will start working and we will soon be able to offer pony rides.

Despite the fact that she wants nothing to do with Nugget, it was love at first sight for him and he has become her protector, trying to keep her away from all the other horses!

  • Val de Vie Polo: An experience loved by all

Posted on September 25, 2009 by Admin

Val de Vie has a fast growing reputation as a premier polo destination, complete with a polo school that offers world-class coaching. The setting is also spectacular, boasting beautiful winelands scenery and convenient proximity to Cape Town. It's no surprise that just as polo is growing in popularity around the world, so is Val de Vie's international profile! Apart from countries such as the UK and US, we've had guests from Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Denmark, Holland and Dubai. We also have plenty of local regulars, as well as our first estate home-owners playing polo with us. Here's what some of our clients had to say about their polo experience:

Fantastic place to enjoy the polo with friends, the fields are great and also the people who were working (playing) there and helping us were so cool and friendly. I enjoy a lot playing over there
Alejandro Vial Perez (6) Captain of Chile 2009

A world class facility, which I will hopefully be making a permanent fixture in my polo calendar. It's very unique in that it offers all one could ask for in a polo destination.
Gareth Evans (5) Captain of Springboks 2009

I can't tell you how much I enjoyed the chukkas and the overall Val de Vie experience, totally addicted now! The people, horses and facilities are really great. I'm afraid I've been spoilt by riding your ponies; everywhere else I go I have to work harder at getting them to the ball than concentrating on my swing! A colleague of mine here and I are debating using our air miles to come down for a long weekend or something to play, perhaps before the tournament.
Many thanks again - I look forward to returning soon.
    Jules, UK

It was a great pleasure being part of such nice and professional and stunning accommodation, great grounds, and very dedicated and skilled polo training given by one of the world’s most experienced polo players in the world John Lister. Not forgetting the great surroundings around Paarl. A true great experience and dream for polo lovers.
    Martin Hartman, Holland

To John and Jo, what you have done is remarkable, not only with the awesome facilities but also creating an environment where everyone feels welcome.
    Arthur Johnson, Cape Town

  • John Lister: Passionate about polo

Posted on September 15, 2009 by Admin

As a skilled polo player and equestrian specialist, John Lister is acknowledged as one of the best coaches in the country. But what’s the story behind Val de Vie’s internationally renowned polo expert?

John’s passion for polo started at an early age. He was playing polo with the adults by the age of ten and was also one of the first young South African players to travel to the UK and Argentina with the express purpose of improving his polo knowledge. Playing off a five-goal handicap for several years and captain of many high and low goal sides, John began his coaching career assisting at school clinics, teaching junior and recreational players and taking them to tournaments. To top it off, his familiarity with farming makes him the ideal grounds-man, green-keeper and stable manager.

Armed with such exceptional experience, John has developed the idea of lifestyle polo, which captures the true spirit of polo as a team sport. As he puts it, “we’re trying to move away from the bad old days of rugby on horseback and make it a sport that everyone can enjoy.”

John also has a knack for communicating with horses and understanding the relationship between rider and steed. “The exacting demands of preparing the speed event horse fascinated me from an early age and I schooled my first horse professionally aged ten. My goal has always been to make the partnership between horses and humans more enjoyable for both. Communication, regardless of the discipline, is paramount. With a little learning and understanding, the lives of both horse and rider can be improved dramatically.”

John’s unique approach to coaching is new to the Western Cape, where polo has been inaccessible to most aspirant players, as well as to experienced players who have struggled to rent horses or get a game. Now Val de Vie offers the opportunity to have lessons, rent horses and play chukkas, whether you’re considering learning polo or are a seasoned player.

Visit the Val de Vie Polo website to find out more about John’s polo lessons and what the estate has to offer .

John’s favourite quotes:“A person's integrity is never more fully tested than when he has power over a voiceless Creature.”
    - AC Grayling

“If your horse says no, you either asked the wrong question, or asked the question wrong.”
    - Pat Parelli”

  • The perfect proposal

Posted on August 24, 2009 by Admin

There are few moments that are as romantic and unforgettable as the marriage proposal. Dominic and Aretha are going to celebrate their special day at Val de Vie, but Dominic first had a very special request: to officially propose to Aretha at Val de Vie, with a horse. The estate is an incredible setting for special moments, and Val de Vie is more than happy to help you create the perfect proposal and make your wedding dreams come true.

Dominic had a very particular idea of what he wanted for the proposal, and it was our pleasure to play a part in this magical moment. As he says, "I'm not a horse rider myself, but was always fascinated with the classical idea of a 'knight on white horse' sort of proposal. I also know that Aretha (my fiancé) absolutely adores horses. This was when I decided to seek the help of the Val de Vie team and boy, did they oblige. I think they might even have been more excited for the proposal than I was!"

John Lister, polo manager, stepped in as the role of the knight, and the scene was set for the perfect proposal. Dominic remembers it fondly: "obviously (unfortunately) I could not be the knight myself, but a note was delivered by a charming, very sophisticated knight (Joanna's husband). The horse was well prepared and looked stunning, almost royal. Our knight gently eased towards us and delivered a 'will you marry me' note to my non-suspecting girlfriend (who thought we were visiting the estate for a wine tasting. Right then, she turned around and I was on my knees whilst a compilation of our favorite love songs softly started playing in the background. I then asked her to marry me."

Both Dominic and Aretha cherished this very special occasion. "I just want to thank Joanna Lister, Petra, Simone and the rest of the team at Val De Vie for their help with realizing my dream proposal. Together we managed to knock my then-girlfriend, now fiancé, off her feet! When we finally dealt with our tears, she found a breath to say yes and suddenly we were surrounded with the rest of the team, who brought us flowers and Champagne. This all took place at the centre of the polo field, during an autumn sunset. It was MAGICAL - a day we will NEVER forget."

  • Polo goes pop!

Posted on August 17, 2009 by Admin

We're always on the lookout for interesting polo news, and Britney Spear's latest music video is no exception! The video for her latest hit, Radar, has got a glamourous polo theme. According to director Dave Meyers, the video is all about “the romance of high-end society and the guys that circulate around there.”

The exciting new video was filmed on location in Santa Barbara at a private estate, complete with its own polo field and horse ranch. It traces how Britney visits her wealthy boyfriend at his mansion, where she watches an elegant polo match. Of course, things get a bit more steamy when she meets a rather dashing polo player!

You might not know it, but Britney is no stranger to polo. Her family sponsor a polo team known as the "Spears Family" which she has watched in action at charity events.

Read more about the video at MTV's website or this Britney fansite.

  • Wild Horizons

Posted on July 31, 2009 by Admin

John and Jo Lister, Managers of Val de Vie Polo, were recently guests of Wild Horizons at Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. It is here that the Wild Horizons Wildlife Trust focuses on projects in Communities Outreach, Wildlife Research, Wildlife Orphanage and Conservation Training. Several elephant orphans have been rescued by their Wildlife Orphanage and given another chance at life.

The visit proved to be very inspirational. John, who usually shuns mounting blocks or leg ups, found himself climbing stairs to a platform before he could ride his “steed” – an African Elephant by the name of Rastas. Previously believed to be too unreliable and wild to train, many rescued African elephants are now giving visitors a chance to interact with them and experience their intelligence and gentleness up close.

These majestic and intelligent giants epitomise the effectiveness of gentle training methods and communication, as the use of force or violence can never be an option with such a large and intelligent animal. Respect and trust are essential, and the elephants are trained using a reward based system. Particularly fascinating is that the elephants are left to roam free during the day and some even take ‘holidays’ vanishing into the bush for months on end, while others, like Damiano, have returned to the wild after living at the Elephant Centre for over ten years. Knowing that the elephants are there willingly makes the experience truly memorable. It is also incredible how gentle and intelligent these creatures are; read about Doji who was ‘delivered’ to the orphanage by a wild bull!

The elephant encounter includes a slow walk through the African bush, with the elephants stopping for occasional Mopani tree snacks en route. John describes the experience as majestic, peaceful, emotive and relaxing, and has a real admiration for these incredible animals and fantastic handlers.

  • The history of polo

Posted on June 17, 2009 by Admin

Ever wondered about a game where eight players gallop after a small white ball mounted on “ponies” with long sticks in their hands, why “shots” don’t include whiskey or guns and “sudden death” isn’t the prelude to a volley of gunfire?
    Where did it start?

John Moore said that “wherever man has left his footprint in the long ascent from barbarism to civilization we will find the hoofprint of the horse beside it.”

And following this hoofprint came polo...

The King of Sports, believed to be the world’s oldest and fastest team sport, traces its origins to ancient Persia and China over 2000 years ago, as contests between competing tribes of Central Asia. Matches resembled battles with 80 to 100 mounted players on opposing sides and outcomes could decide war between tribes.

The rugged horse game spread east with the Moguls evolving as a training method for the Elite Cavalry. Thankfully along the way the tradition of using a sheep’s head to score goals, was replaced by a ball. By the 16th century polo was established in India by the Emperor Babur, where 19th century British cavalry officers discovered the galloping game. Originally referred to as “Hockey-on-horseback” the officers took the game back to England from where it spread to through the colonies. Today Polo, known as the fastest ball sport in the world, is played in over 80 countries by both men and women. The exceptionally skilled and daring riders of Argentina brought a whole new dimension to the game, and still today Argentina remains the Mecca for polo enthusiasts with the majority of the high goal players coming from Argentina.

    Interesting facts:
    • Both Alexander the Great and Genghis Khan were passionate polo players
    • Still played in Pakistan, an annual match is held at full moon on a rocky field in the 11 000 foot Shandur Pass following rules dictated 800 years ago by a descendant of Genghis Khan.
    • The word Polo is believed to be derived from the Tibetan word “pulu” meaning ball.
    • The Turkomans beat the Persians in the first recorded public match in 600 BC.
    • King Sapoor II of Persia learnt to play the game aged 7 in the 4th Century AD.
    • Shah Abbas the Great built a polo field (300 yards long with goal posts 8 yards apart) in 16th century AD at Ispahan, then the capital. Used as a public park today, the original stone goal posts are still in place.
    • The first polo club in the world was formed by the British at Silchar in the 1850’s.
    • The oldest active club in the world today is the Calcutta Club founded in 1862.
    • Polo was an Olympic Sport from 1900 to 1939.
    • Chukka comes from the Indian word for a circle or round.

  • A welcome to Tahila and Spirit

Posted on June 2, 2009 by Admin

Val de Vie is delighted to welcome our first two non-polo ponies into the livery! Easily recognisable from the polo ponies by their flowing manes, Tahila and Spirit are the newest residents at the Val de Vie Stables. Their owners and Val de Vie Homeowners, Maureen and Ryal are thoroughly enjoying the benefits of having their friends close to home. Maureen regularly pops in to give them a carrot and pat on her way to work and the foursome can often be seen out enjoying riding on the Estate. After some initial surprise, Tahila and Spirit have settled into the “polo routine” and walk with the herd to and from the stables with a bareback rider.

Maureen is thrilled with the Estate's livery. “The the stables are managed in the most professional way by John and Jo, as well as their passion for the horses is part of their everyday living.

I've learned so much from them in the past month by stabling at Val de Vie. John is busy showing Spirit that he is actually a horse and Tahila has told me she is living in a five star hotel now and thinks she is on semi–retirement!"

  • Winter at the Polo School

Posted on May 12, 2009 by Admin

As the days get shorter and clouds start to fill our skies, it's clear that winter has finally arrived. That's why our Polo School is getting ready to close during June and July, giving the ponies a well deserved break before they gradually get back to work in August. Polo ponies are high performance athletes kept in peak condition throughout the season, so a complete rest period and break from routine is vital for both their physical and mental health. Just like people, they need their rest!

In the Western Cape the polo “off season” coincides with the wet winter months, but our ponies still need as much care as ever. Hoof trimming, nutrition and daily checks for illness or injury are essential to maintain their general health. Winter is also the ideal time to perform vaccinations against illnesses such as African Horse Sickness, and for important dental check ups. Horse’s teeth can develop sharp points which lead to pain and poor condition, which is why the dentist's bi-yearly visits keep their teeth in good shape.

They might have plenty of shelter from the elements, but most of our horses are happy to be outdoors even in the chilliest weather. Of course, the horses are preparing for the colder months themselves, growing thick winter coats that make them seem more like grizzly bears!

  • Polo at Val de Vie

Posted on April 13, 2009 by Admin

Val de Vie is fast becoming South Africa's top polo venue and our first operational year has been nothing less than spectacular. With an ever growing local and international client base, we've enjoyed a very busy season with high profile events such as the glamorous BMW International, held on 28 February 2009.

The exclusive event was attended by polo enthusiasts and socialites alike, eager to watch the South African polo team face the reigning world champions Chile. The match was marked by its fast and exciting pace, and after an intense battle it was Chile that won the day. As spectators sipped on Val de Vie sparkling wine and took in the views of the surrounding winelands, they also enjoyed a dazzling showcase of the latest BMWs, a lavish display of German design in its finest form. The prestigious occasion is featured in Issue 3 of Private Edition magazine, so be sure to get your copy of this gorgeous publication.

Meanwhile, our Polo School is winding down for the end of the season, but fantastic training is still on offer for anyone who would like to learn the sport or hone their skills. It's also a great way to keep fit this winter!
